A modified method of Van Driest's flat-plate theory for turbulent boundary layer has been found to simplify the calculation of local skin-friction coefficients which, in turn, have made it possible to obtain through Reynolds analogy theoretical turbulent heat-transfer coefficients in the form of Stanton number. A general formula is given and charts are presented from which the modified method can be solved for Mach numbers 1.0 to 12.0, temperature ratios 0.2 to 6.0, and Reynolds numbers 200,000 to 200,000,000

Two methods are presented fordynamically scaling store models for wind-tunnel store-dropping studies. For each method the model and prototype Mach numbers are assumed to be necessarily equal and the Reynolds number effects are assumed to be negligible. The light-model method gives exact simulation of the store motions except that the vertical ejection velocity is increased or it can be eliminated by accelerating the parent model upward at the instant of store separation. The heavy-model method, in which the parent model is stationary, gives complete simulation of the store motion except that the short-period longitudinal oscillation is too poorly damped; the defect is of no serious consequence during the first phase of a drop because the time during which the store is critically close to the parent model is generally small compared with the period of longitudinal oscillation. The heavy-model method is generally recommended for store-dropping studies; however, it is often impossible to make the models sufficiently heavy and with the proper moment of inertia. If such is the case, the light-model method is required

A discussion is presented of experimental methods for determining store-release trajectories at supersonic speeds from measured force data on scale models and from dynamic-model tests. The dynamic-similarity laws which are significant when conducting either free-fall or ejected dynamic-model tests are presented and discussed. Results from force tests and dynamic-model tests were used in an effort to evaluate the ability of both techniques to predict full-scale-release trajectories

A design procedure for reducing the interference pressure drag of the root and tips of sweptback wings is described. This is accomplished by modifying the fuselage cross-sectional area in the vicinity of the wing root and by adding specifically shaped stores at the wing tips in order that the rate of change of cross-sectional area of these bodies is proportional to the wing-section thickness. The constant of proportionality is the product of the sine and cosine of the local angle of sweepback. This method, called the sine-cosine method, was arrived at by using one-dimensional incompressible flow relations to obtain average spanwise flow deflections over the wing. Experimental and theoretical pressure-drag values from Mach number 0.9 to 1.35 for configurations designed by this method were compared with the values of two similar configurations designed by the transonic and supersonic area-rule methods. Although the sine-cosine configuration with wing-tip stores had more usable volume than the area-rule configurations, it was found to have lower drag than the transonic area-rule configuration and approximately the same drag as the supersonic area-rule configuration
