Thus the double integral occurring in the formulation of the problem is reduced to two single integrals, one of which is taken over the chord and the other over the span of the lifting surface. By this reduction the three dimensional problem appears separated into two twodimensional problems, one being effectively the problem of twodimensional flow and the other the problem of spanwisecirculation distribution

The deflections of the plate are assumed to vary linearly across the chord; minimization of the potential energy by means of the calculus of variations then leads to two ordinary linear differential equations for the bending deflections and the twist of the plate. Because the cantilever is analyzed as a plate rather than as a beam, the effect of constraint against axial warping in torsion is inherently included. The application of this method to specific problems involving static deflection, vibration, and buckling of cantilever plates is presented. The present report describes a method for solving the resultant threedimensional problem based on a generalization of approximate methods for solving twodimensional problems. It is shown that the calculation of threedimensional corrections to the twodimensional integral equation for spanwise variation of circulation, provided tabulated values for the kernal of the integral equation are available
