Policeman's prelude by Harry Cole( Book )

6 editions published between 1984 and 2002 in English and held by 160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author takes us back to his early years. Although overshadowed by the war, his childhood was full of fun, playing mischief on the streets of south London and hop-picking annually in Kent. When, finally, his tenement home was bombed, he was evacuated to Norfolk where he enjoyed a totally different way of life. After leaving school at fourteen, he took a series of jobs - as a packer, cricket-bat maker, stonemason - with a farcical interlude for national service. In 1952, he decided to settle down: he married and, rather to his surprise, joined the Metropolitan Police

5 editions published between 1985 and 1992 in English and held by 119 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1952, more by default than by design, Harry Cole joined the Metropolitan Police. After a training of sorts he was posted to Carter Street Police Station in South London, and there he remained, beating the streets of Southwark as plain PC Cole, for thirty years. From time to time he put in for transfer - to CID or to traffic patrol - but these applications were always hilarious failures. Then halfway through his career the perfect job was created, that of community copper on his own home beat

It's a policeman's lot to be involved with eccentric human behaviour and bizarre happenings, with personal dramas and social occasions, accidental disasters and deliberate wrongdoings. PC Cole, after nearly thirty years on the beat, has seen it all and, whether he's investigating the case of the exploding sewer cover, or refereeing at a drunken Irish party, withstanding the abuse of the Gay Liberation Front, or sorting out the imaginary fears of a lonely old man, it's his sense of humour that often seems the saving grace

Anything can happen to a policeman on his patch; he may find his neck entwined with the Rubenesque thighs of Rosie Rafferty; his search for a victim may become a Pied Piper tour of a whole tower block; the person who vandalised an old lady's flat may turn out to be the last person he'd imagined; he may even find himself on duty at a Royal Wedding.
