Le Corbusier before Le Corbusier : applied arts, architecture, painting, photography, 1907-1922 by Le Corbusier( Book )

20 editions published in 2002 in 3 languages and held by 508 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In his numerous writings Le Corbusier remained uncharacteristically silent about his early career. This book examines his nascent years as a designer and architect, focusing on the period from 1907 to 1922 - the year he changed his name from Pierre Edouard Jeanneret and established his identity as Le Corbusier. The contributors to the book offer in unprecedented detail an account of Le Corbusier's formative years and the cultural, intellectual, and creative concerns that absorbed him as a young artist in Switzerland and Paris." "This book is the catalogue for an exhibition at the Langmatt Foundation in Baden, Switzerland, and the Bard Graduate Center, New York."--Jacket

Venturi, Scott Brown & Associates : buildings and projects, 1986-1998 by Stanislaus von Moos( Book )

14 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 356 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The architectural partnership of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown has long been known for its preeminent position in the theory and practice of architecture. Their writings, including Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture and Learning from Los Vegas, have profoundly directed architectural thought in the twentieth century. The firm's built work - in its creative understanding of history and the everday environment, its emphasis on multiculturalism and multimedia, and especially its considerationof iconography versus abstraction - has been equally influential. This comprehensive monograph on Venturi, Scott Brown & Associates includes more than eighty buildings and projects: urban plans and development studies; important civic buildings such as the Sainsbury Wing of London's National Gallery; and a great number of projects at universities across the United States. Also presented are spectacular renovations for the Frank Furness library building at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard's Memorial Hall and designs for houses, exhibitions, fabrics, furniture, and decorative items. The catalog, written by the architects, focuses on important aspects of their practice in the late 1980s and the 1990s, notably the juxtaposition of a "hype" sensibility in decoration - manifested in large-scale LED signs and colorful supergraphics - and a generic architecture. The introductory essay, by Stanislaus von Moos, discusses five major themes in Venturi and Scott Brown's architecture: its dialogue with their hometown, Philadelphia, as both a national shrine and a center of architectural innovation; the importance of the American campus as a model for planning and design; organicism as a source of their design theory; the role of realism and abstraction in the firm's architecture; and the Venturis' recent interest in Japan and its traditions. Finally, in an interview conducted by von Moos and Mary McLeod, the architects comment on Las Vegas today, the role of feminism and mannerism in architecture, and the importance of the ordinary. -- from front flap
Max Huber by Stanislaus von Moos( Book )

17 editions published between 2006 and 2011 in English and Italian and held by 328 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Max Huber (1919-92) is one of the most significant graphic designers of the twentieth century. In this comprehensive monograph, the first to be published on this major figure, the authors trace and illustrate Huber's entire career, from his early years in Switzerland to his more mature work in Italy." "Huber's style assimilated the teachings of the early modern masters, such as Max Bill and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, combining their principles with the enormous variety of cultural influences present in vibrant post-war Milan. This fully illustrated survey of his work demonstrates that Huber was among the first to apply the aesthetics of the avant garde to a corporate and commercial environment, creating formal solutions that he would go on to use throughout his life. Among the 450 illustrations in this book (the majority of which were never published before) are examples of his celebrated posters for the Monza races, his jazz record covers and book series for major Italian publishers, which remain appreciated today as superb examples of their genres." "Some of Huber's most enduring achievements were on a completely different scale and remain in the collective memory of generations and on the streets of Italy: his logo design for the department store La Rinascente and the supermarket chain Esselunga, were so influential as to change the public's perception of these two popular stores and, moreover, the visual landscape of Milan itself." "The three expert authors of this book (Stanislaus von Moos, Mara Campana and Giampiero Bosoni) were privileged to have the full support of Huber's widow, Aoi Kona, who granted them unrestricted access to the renowned archive of Huber's work that is now housed in the m.a.x. Museo, in Chiasso, Switzerland. This wide-ranging and exhaustively researched book demonstrates the importance of this fascinating and influential figure in the history of modern graphic design."--Jacket

Louis Kahn : the power of architecture by Louis I Kahn( Book )

8 editions published in 2012 in English and German and held by 249 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The American architect Louis Kahn is one of the great master builders of the twentieth century. With complex spatial compositions, an elemental formal vocabulary and a choreographic mastery of light, Kahn created buildings of powerful archaic beauty. Among his most important works are the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California (1959-65), the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas (1966-72) and the National Assembly Building in Dhaka, Bangladesh (1962-83). Louis Kahn: The Power of Architecture is the first comprehensive publication on this architect in 20 years, and presents all of his important projects. Essays by prominent Kahn experts discuss the sources, contexts and influences of his work; among the authors are such renowned art and architectural historians as Stanislaus von Moos, William J. R. Curtis, Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen and Neil Levine. Topics discussed include Kahn's pioneering role in concrete construction; the visionary plans for his home city of Philadelphia; his years at Yale University; his dialogue with Josef Albers; and his importance for modern architecture in Southeast Asia. An illustrated biography provides new facts and insights about Kahn's life and work. In interviews, leading architects such as Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Peter Zumthor and Sou Fujimoto explain Kahn's significance in today's architectural discourse. An extensive catalogue of works features original drawings and architectural models from the Kahn archive, many of which are presented with high-quality images for the first time. The book is further augmented by a portfolio of Kahn's travel drawings as well as photographs by Thomas Florschuetz, which offer completely new views of the Salk Institute and the Indian Institute of Management
