Climate since A.D. 1500 by Raymond S Bradley ( Book )
24 editions published between 1991 and 2004 in English and held by 711 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In order to understand how climate may vary in the future--whether as a result of human activities or of natural fluctuations--we must first understand how and why it has varied in the past. The period since A.D. 1500 is of particular interest, encompassing as it did not only the 'Little Ice Age', but also unusual solar activity and several exceptionally large explosive volcanic eruptions. Climate Since A.D. 1500 discusses the many diverse records of climatic variations that are available for the last 500 years. An introductory chapter provides an explanation of the methods used in the chapters which follow, and a final chapter summarizes data from all the various records. Factors which are potentially important in causing climatic changes are also discussed. The result is a new perspective on the so-called 'Little Ice Age' and also on the climate of the twentieth century. The editors have gathered together over fifty contributors from all over the world to provide as wide a geographical dimension as possible. All leading scientists in their fields, they present climatic and meteorological records of climatic variations available for the last 500 years, including research from several areas not previously recorded in an English language volume. These include long instrumental records, historical documents, dendroclimatic data and ice core records from all over the world including Antarctica, North and South America, North Africa, the Soviet Union, the Far East and Australasia
Quaternary paleoclimatology : methods of paleoclimatic reconstruction by Raymond S Bradley ( Book )
27 editions published between 1984 and 1996 in English and held by 573 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Global warming and political intimidation : how politicians cracked down on scientists as the earth heated up by Raymond S Bradley ( Book )
6 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 439 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Global warming is the number one environmental issue of our time, yet some prominent politicians have refused to accept scientific evidence of human responsibility and have opposed any legislation or international agreement that would limit greenhouse gas emissions. A few have More...gone even further and have tried to destroy the reputations of scientists researching climate change by deliberately undermining the credibility of their research. These politicians have sought to sow seeds of doubt in the minds of the public and to weaken public and political support for the control of fossil fuel use. In this powerful book, highly respected climate scientist Raymond Bradley provides the inside story from the front lines of the debate. In clear and direct language, he describes the tactics those in power have used to intimidate him and his colleagues part of a larger pattern of governmental suppression of scientific information, politics at the expense of empirically based discourse. Speaking from his experience, Bradley exposes the fault lines in the global warming debate, while providing a concise primer on climate change. The result is a cautionary tale of how politics and science can become fatally intertwined, written by one scientist who was unwittingly ensnared in a web of political intimidation
Paleoclimate, global change, and the future by Keith D Alverson ( Book )
9 editions published between 2002 and 2013 in English and held by 386 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book provides a synthesis of the past decade of research into global changes that occurred in the earth system in the past. Focus is achieved by concentrating on those changes in the Earth's past environment that best inform our evaluation of current and future global changes and their consequences for human populations. The book stands as a ten year milestone in the operation of the Past Global Changes (PAGES) Project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP). It seeks to provide a quantitative understanding of the Earths environment in the geologically recent past and to define the envelope of natural environmental variability against which anthropogenic impacts on the Earth System may be assessed
Precipitation history of the Rocky Mountain States by Raymond S Bradley ( Book )
3 editions published in 1976 in English and held by 271 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Hadley circulation : present, past and future by Henry F Diaz ( Book )
8 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 147 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Hadley and Walker Circulations are fundamental regulators of the Earth's energy budget. Although the Hadley Circulation is a well-known concept, surprisingly little attention has been paid to understanding both short and long-term variability of the system. This book reviews current knowledge of Hadley and Walker circulation dynamics and their interactions with the major global monsoon systems, and evaluates paleoclimatic records within the domain of the Hadley Circulation that shed light on past variability of climate over the last 1000 years, the Holocene (the last 11,500 years), glacial periods, and warm climate periods in the past. The book examines potentially important factors that may have affected the Hadley and Walker Circulations on these different time scales and evaluates changes in the Hadley Circulation and the monsoons as simulated by coupled models of past climate conditions, and predicted future conditions under an enhanced greenhouse effect. This book is meant to serve as a fundamental reference work for current and future researchers, graduate students in the atmospheric sciences and geosciences, and climate specialists involved in interdisciplinary research
Climatic variations and forcing mechanisms of the last 2000 years by Philip D Jones ( Book )
7 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 141 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A profound knowledge of the past climate is vital for our understanding of global warming. The past 2000 years are both the period which is of most relevance to the next century and that for which there is the most evidence. High-resolution proxy records for this period are available from a variety of sources. Five sections consider dendroclimatology, ice cores, corals, historical records, lake varves, and other indicators. The final two sections cover the histories of various forcing factors and attempt to bring together records from a variety of sources and provide explanations
Global changes of the past : papers arising from the 1989 OIES Global Change Institute, Snowmass, Colorado, 24 July - 4 August, 1989 by Global Change Institute on Explaining Records of Past Global Changes ( Book )
5 editions published between 1989 and 1991 in English and held by 97 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Climatic change at high elevation sites by Henry F Diaz ( Book )
10 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 77 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book provides a unique, in-depth view of past, present and potential future climatic change in mountain regions, and in particular on the mechanisms which are responsible for this change. Other books which focus on environmental change in mountains focus more generally on the impacts of this change on mountain systems, rather than on the regional features of climatic change itself. The book enters into a high level of detail concerning results of international investigations which involve specialists from numerous climate-related disciplines. The book can be used in an academic and research context, for advanced graduate and doctoral students, as well as researchers working in various domains of relevance to climatic change issues. The book also has relevance in the context of future activities of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in terms of providing up-to-date knowledge of fundamental mechanisms and consequences of climatic change in mountain regions
