"Paleoclimatology: Reconstructing Climates of the Quaternary, Third Edition, provides a thorough overview of the methods of paleoclimatic reconstruction and of the historical changes in climate during the past three million years. This thoroughly updated and revised edition systematically examines each type of proxy and elucidates the major attributes and the limitations of each. Paleoclimatology, Third Edition provides necessary context for those interested in understanding climate changes at present and how current trends in climate compare with changes that have occurred in the past. The text is richly illustrated and includes an extensive bibliography for further research."-- {450}c provided by publisher
Climate since A.D. 1500 by Raymond S Bradley( Book )

31 editions published between 1991 and 2016 in English and held by 686 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In order to understand how climate may vary in the future - whether as a result of human activities or of natural fluctuations - we must first understand how and why it has varied in the past. "Climate Since AD 1500" presents a new perspective on the "Little Ice Age" and of the climate of the 20th century. The editors have gathered together over 50 contributors from all over the world to provide as wide a geographical dimension as possible. Leading scientists in their fields, they present climate and meteorological records of climatic variations available for the last 500 years, including research from several areas not previously recorded in an English language volume. These records include: historical documents; long instrumental records; tree rings and ice core records; records based on worldwide current research. Factors that are potentially important in causing climatic changes are also discussed. A postscript has been added since the previous edition to incorporate new research from the vast range of literature published on the subject in the last two years

Global warming and political intimidation : how politicians cracked down on scientists as the earth heated up by Raymond S Bradley( Book )

10 editions published between 2011 and 2013 in English and held by 449 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the publisher. Global warming is the number one environmental issue of our time, yet some prominent politicians have refused to accept scientific evidence of human responsibility and have opposed any legislation or international agreement that would limit greenhouse gas emissions. A few have gone even further and have tried to destroy the reputations of scientists researching climate change by deliberately undermining the credibility of their research. These politicians have sought to sow seeds of doubt in the minds of the public and to weaken public and political support for the control of fossil fuel use. In this powerful book, highly respected climate scientist Raymond Bradley provides the inside story from the front lines of the debate. In clear and direct language, he describes the tactics those in power have used to intimidate him and his colleagues part of a larger pattern of governmental suppression of scientific information, politics at the expense of empirically based discourse. Speaking from his experience, Bradley exposes the fault lines in the global warming debate, while providing a concise primer on climate change. The result is a cautionary tale of how politics and science can become fatally intertwined, written by one scientist who was unwittingly ensnared in a web of political intimidation
Paleoclimate, global change, and the future by Keith D Alverson( Book )

14 editions published between 2002 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 398 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book provides a synthesis of the past decade of research into global changes that occurred in the earth system in the past. Focus is achieved by concentrating on those changes in the Earth's past environment that best inform our evaluation of current and future global changes and their consequences for human populations. The book stands as a ten year milestone in the operation of the Past Global Changes (PAGES) Project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP). It seeks to provide a quantitative understanding of the Earths environment in the geologically recent past and to define the envelope of natural environmental variability against which anthropogenic impacts on the Earth System may be assessed
Precipitation history of the Rocky Mountain States by Raymond S Bradley( Book )

Climatic variations and forcing mechanisms of the last 2000 years by Philip D Jones( Book )

10 editions published between 1996 and 2013 in English and held by 142 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A profound knowledge of the past climate is vital for our understanding of global warming. The past 2000 years are both the period which is of most relevance to the next century and that for which there is the most evidence. High-resolution proxy records for this period are available from a variety of sources. Five sections consider dendroclimatology, ice cores, corals, historical records, lake varves, and other indicators. The final two sections cover the histories of various forcing factors and attempt to bring together records from a variety of sources and provide explanations
The Hadley circulation : present, past and future by Henry F Diaz( Book )

11 editions published between 2004 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 140 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Hadley and Walker Circulations are fundamental regulators of the Earths energy budget. Although the Hadley Circulation is a well-known concept, surprisingly little attention has been paid to understanding both short and long-term variability of the system. This book reviews current knowledge of Hadley and Walker circulation dynamics and their interactions with the major global monsoon systems, and evaluates paleoclimatic records within the domain of the Hadley Circulation that shed light on past variability of climate over the last 1000 years, the Holocene (the last 11,500 years), glacial periods, and warm climate periods in the past. The book examines potentially important factors that may have affected the Hadley and Walker Circulations on these different time scales and evaluates changes in the Hadley Circulation and the monsoons as simulated by coupled models of past climate conditions, and predicted future conditions under an enhanced greenhouse effect. This book is meant to serve as a fundamental reference work for current and future researchers, graduate students in the atmospheric sciences and geosciences, and climate specialists involved in interdisciplinary research

Climatic change at high elevation sites by Henry F Diaz( Book )

9 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book provides a unique, in-depth view of past, present and potential future climatic change in mountain regions, and in particular on the mechanisms which are responsible for this change. Other books which focus on environmental change in mountains focus more generally on the impacts of this change on mountain systems, rather than on the regional features of climatic change itself. The book enters into a high level of detail concerning results of international investigations which involve specialists from numerous climate-related disciplines. The book can be used in an academic and research context, for advanced graduate and doctoral students, as well as researchers working in various domains of relevance to climatic change issues. The book also has relevance in the context of future activities of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in terms of providing up-to-date knowledge of fundamental mechanisms and consequences of climatic change in mountain regions

A Climatic data bank for northern hemisphere land areas, 1851-1980 by Raymond S Bradley( Book )

7 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A new compilation of long-term temperature and precipitation station data is described. Over 700 temperature and 1200 precipitation records extending back into the 19th century have been incorporated into the data bank. Problems which contribute to potential inhomogeneities in the records are discussed (particularly changes in methods of computing mean daily temperature). The station temperature data have been used in producing a gridded data set of departures from a reference period (1946-60). Problems associated with changes in spatial data coverage are discussed with reference to the computation of "hemispheric" average temperature through time

Tracking environmental change using lake sediments by J. P Smol( Book )

3 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This third volume in the Developments in Paleoenvironmental Research series deals with the major terrestrial, algal, and siliceous indicators used in paleolimnology. Other volumes deal with the acquisition and archiving of lake sediment cores, chronological techniques, and large-scale basin analysis methods (Volume 1), physical and geochemical parameters and methods (Volume 2), zoological techniques (Volume 4), and statistical and data handling methods (Volume 5). These monographs will provide sufficient detail and breadth to be useful handbooks for both seasoned practitioners as well as newcomers to the area of paleolimnology. Although the chapters in these volumes target mainly lacustrine settings, many of the techniques described can also be readily applied to fluvial, glacial, marine, estuarine, and peatland environments
