The enterprise of science in Islam : new perspectives( Book )

11 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 349 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Between A.D. 800 and 1450, the most important centers for the study of what we now call "the exact sciences"--Including the mathematical sciences of arithmetic, geometry, and trigonometry and their applications in such fields as astronomy, astrology, geography, cartography, and optics - were not in Europe but in the vast, multinational Islamic world." "This book offers an overview of this newly energized field of historical investigation. The topics discussed include cross-cultural transmission; transformations of Greek optics; the philosophy and practice of mathematics; numbers, geometry, and architecture; the transmission of astronomy; and science and medicine in the Maghrib. The emphasis throughout the book is on the transmission of scientific knowledge, either from one culture to another or within the medieval Islamic world."--Jacket
Ibn Al-Haytham's Completion of the conics by Alhazen( Book )

This book is a revised and slightly augmented version of my doctoral dissertation (Utrecht 1983). The Subfaculty of Mathematics of the Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht gener ously enabled me to pursue the necessary research. I thank Prof. Dr. F. van der Blij for his interest in my work and for his many stimulating questions and remarks. The discussions with Dr. Henk Bos and his criticisms of earlier drafts have resulted in essential improvements in method and style. Prof. Gerald Toomer (Brown University) suggested the topic of the thesis and assisted in all stages of its preparation, even at the expense of his own research. He discussed the entire Arabic text and the English translation with me during my visit to Providence (1981), which was financially sup ported by the Netherlands Organization for the Advancement of Pure Research (Z.W.O.). I wish to express my sincerest thanks to Dr. Remke Kruk for teaching me to read Arabic manuscripts, and for constant advice and encouragement in the past nine years. I am grateful to Prof. Dr. H. Daiber (Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam) for a number of valuable remarks and suggestions in philological matters. My colleagues Jan van Maanen (Utrecht) al1~_ ~r. Len Berggren (Vancouver) read large parts of the thesis with meticulous care and suggested many improvements. All errors and inad equacies that remain are entirely my own. Thanks are due to Dr. J
O ye gentlemen : Arabic studies on science and literary culture in honour of Remke Kruk( Book )

Br>
Arabic Studies on Science and Literary Culture in Honour of Remke Kruk
by Vrolijk, Arnoud; Hogendijk, J. P.

Terms of use
O ye Gentlemen explores two vital strands in Arabic culture: the Greek tradition in science and philosophy and the literary tradition. They are permanent and, though drawing on Islam as a dominant religion, they are by no means dependent on it. That the strands freely interweave within the broader scope of Schrifttum is shown by more than thirty essays on subjects as varied as the social organisation of bees, spontaneous generation in the Shi ite tradition, astronomy in the Arabian nights, the benefits of sex, precious stones in a literary text, the virtue of women in Judaeo-Arabic stories, animals in Middle Eastern music and the transmission of Arabic science and philosophy to the medieval West.

Descriptive content provided by Syndetics™, a Bowker service.
Studies in the history of the exact sciences in honour of David Pingree( Book )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This collection of essays reflects the wide range of David Pingree's expertise in the scientific texts (above all, concerning astronomy and astrology) of Ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, India, Persia, and the medieval Arabic, Hebrew and Latin traditions. Both theoretical aspects and the practical applications of the exact sciences-in time keeping, prediction of the future, and the operation of magic-are dealt with. The book includes several critical editions and translations of hitherto unknown or understudied texts, and a particular emphasis is on the diffusion of scientific learning from one culture to another, and through time. Above all, the essays show the variety and sophistication of the exact sciences in non-Western societies in pre-modern times
