In der Liebe und im Krieg "Roman der Liebe" nannte Arnold Zweig dieses Buch. Aber es ist keine gute Zeit für die Liebe. Während an der Westfront dem Armierer Werner Bertin der patriotische Rausch gründlich verfliegt, kämpft in Berlin Lenore Wahl, behütete Tochter aus gutem Hause, gegen Familie, Konvention und Krieg. Zudem hat sie den Konflikt einer ungewollten Schwangerschaft zu bewältigen und die schwere Entscheidung zur Abtreibung. Auf dieses Buch reagierte die Presse, als es Ende 1931 erschien, denkbar kontrovers und verunsichert. Viele Kritiker bewerteten es, gerade im Vergleich zu dem 1927 erschienenen Roman "Der Streit um den Sergeanten Grischa", als befremdlich privat. Wie konnte Zweig soviel Aufmerksamkeit auf die Gemütsbewegungen, vor allen auf den Zorn einer Frau verwenden in einer Zeit, da die Weltgeschicke an den Fronten von Männern bewegt wurden. Kaum einer vermerkte, daß Lenore Wahl von ihrem in Friedenszeiten so feinfühligen Freund vergewaltigt worden war und somit, genau genommen, als "Kriegsopfer" zu betrachten wären. Und wie viele wollten schon genau wissen, wie eine Frau eine, 1914 wie 1932 illegale, Abtreibung erlebte. Heute bleibt dieser Roman nicht zuletzt deshalb aufregend, weil er individuelle Schicksale in ihren feinsten psychischen Schwingungen darstellt und zugleich Weltgeschichte vergegenwärtigt
