Electronic genie : the tangled history of silicon by Frederick Seitz( Book )

6 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 566 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Electronic Genie takes its readers on a two-century journey that begins with Antoine Lavoisiter's prediction of the existence of silicon as an element. It traces the emergence of silicon as key to the development of most forms of today's electronics and its role in making possible the revolutionary digital computer." "Loaded with information about such original thinkers as Lavoisier, John Bardeen, Bill Gates, Patrick Haggerty, Gordon Moore, and many more, the volume traces the use of silicon in metallurgy, as a diode rectifier in wireless and radio, and ultimately as a nonlinear element for heterodyne mixing in radar during World War II." "Electronic Genie will appeal to students of science and technology as well as to anyone interested in the history of these fields."--Jacket

"Seitz Presents a sophisticated, balanced, and practical analysis of the relationship between science and society with a verbal parsimony that some. might well emulate. Both scientists and literate nonscientists will find this book an easy read that is informative, and intellectually stimulating on a subject that all of us should be thinking about." Interdisciplinary Science Reviews"The book is recommended for all considering a career in the natural sciences as well as for their mentors. It should be required reading for policy makers in science, both academic and governmental. Laymen with an interest in science will enjoy and benefit from this concise and readable history of science" American Scientist

On the statistics of luminescent counter systems by Frederick Seitz( Book )

3 editions published in 1950 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The type of crystal counter which depends upon the combination of luminescent crystals and a photomultiplier tube shows promise of being of great service in the detection of radiations both because of its high sensitivity and speed of registry and recovery. This device has been developed by a large number of individuals, almost too numerous to mention; however, the origin of the system appears to rest with Coltman and Marshall,1 who employed powdered luminescent materials of the type used in previous commercial luminescent systems, and with Broser and Kallmann, who first appreciated the advantages of employing large, transparent, luminescent crystals and introduced organic materials
On the frontier : my life in science by Frederick Seitz( Book )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On the Frontier is Frederick Seitz's long-awaited memoir. Here in brisk, anecdotal style enhanced by dozens of never before published photographs, Dr. Seitz recalls the beginnings of his fascination with scientific inquiry; his academic endeavors at Stanford, Princeton, and the California Institute of Technology; his professional tenures at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, the Defense Department, NATO, and The Rockefeller University; his presidency of the National Academy of Sciences; and more. But On the Frontier is more than a story of one man. In describing his life and times, his friends and colleagues, and the environment in which his career flourished, Frederick Seitz offers an insider's look at the crucial developments, issues, personalities, and institutions of modern physics over nearly a century of development
