A detailed examination of an episode in the early career of Sigmund Freud concerning his collaboration with Wilhelm Fliess over the case of Emma Eckstein who had apparently experienced a traumatic childhood sexual incident. Fliess believed in cauterisation of the nose as a cure for some forms of neurosis. Freud referred Emma Eckstein to Fliess who performed surgery on her nose, an operation which went tragically wrong and resulted in Fr. Eckstein's death. The story is narrated by Jeffrey Masson (editor of "Freud's Letters") with dramatic reconstruction, and contributions from Lisa Appignanesi (writer), Prof. Marianne Springer-Kremiser (psychoanalyst) and Valerie Sinason (expert on child abuse)
