Thermodynamic properties of an isolated spin impurity in a Heisenberg ferromagnet are calculated as functions of the magnitude of the impurity spin and of the strength of its exchange coupling to the host spins. The magnetization of the impurity, the energy and weight of its s-state localized mode (when such exists), and the shape of the local spectral weight function are all obtained as functions of temperature. It is shown that the Oguchi transformation in the theory of ferromagnetism is a low-temperature spin wave approximation, the validity of which depends on the implicit assumption that the kinematical interaction can be ignored. This limitation has the consequence that the theory of Oguchi and Honma, if accepted at higher tem peratures, predicts an infinite Curie tempera ture. (Author)

The two-particle cluster approximation of Strieb, Callen and Horwitz is extended to ferromagnets and paramagnets with nearest and next-nearest neighbor exchange, with particular reference to EuO, EuS, EuSe and EuTe. Curie temperatures, magnetization curves for general values of the applied field, susceptibility, spin correlation functions, energy, and specific heat curves are calculated. To explore the sensitivity of the theory to the exchange constants the results of the cluster approximation are given for various ratios of the first and second neighbor exchange constants, including the special case of vanishing second neighbor exchange (in this latter case the approximation generalizes the constant coupling approximation to arbitrary spin). All the presently measured magnetic properties are rather insensitive to the particular choice of exchange constants provided that these are chosen to be consistent with the observed Curie temperature; measurement of the spin correlation functions, however, would provide a sensitive criterion for the choice of exchange constants. Molecular field theory is frequently used to relate the higher moments <(S to the z power) to the n power6 to the first moment <S to the z power>, the latter quantity being known from empirical magnetization data. The results are in excellent agreement with experiment, despite the glaring inadequacies of molecular field theory. It is shown that the functional dependence of <(S to the z power) to the n power> on <S to the z power> follows only from a particular feature of molecular field theory, which has much wider generality and validity. The same result is obtained in all quasi-independent collective excitation theories. This fact is corroborated in decoupled Green function theories, and is used to simplify the form of these latter theories. (Author)

The problem of stability of various ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin configurations is considered. Simple cubic, face-centered cubic, and body-centered cubic lattices are analyzed, for all possible ratios of the strengths of the nearest-neighbor and next-nearestneighbor exchange constants (all other exchange constants are neglected), and for all temperatures. The calculations are carried out by a Green function 'random phase' approximation. The results are presented in terms of phase diagrams, and the nature of the instabilities at the phase boundaries is discussed. (Author)

The spin-flop transition in a uniaxial antiferromagnet defines three critical fields; that of the true thermodynamic transition and those limiting the local stability of antiferromagnetic and spin-flop phases. The latter two are calculated by a spin-wave analysis. The results are in qualitative agreement with the hysteresis observed by Schelleng and Friedberg in the spin-flop transition in manganese bromide. The spin-wave spectrum of the spin-flop phase is given, and the magnetization in the spin-flop phase is found to increase more rapidly that linearly with field because of quantum corrections absent in molecular field theory
