Rationality, justice and the social contract : themes from Morals by agreement ( Book )
11 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 416 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In one important tradition of political and ethical thought, principles of justice are viewed as if they arose from a contract among individuals, drawn up in some pre-social "state of nature". David Gauthier's "Morals by Agreement" is a contribution to this tradition, which seeks to show that rational individuals would accept certain moral constraints on their choices. In this volume, a group of philosophers, economists and political theorists discuss Gauthier's work and explore the possibilities and limitations of the contractarian approach to issues of justice. The contributors are: Robert Sugden, David Gauthier, Martin Hollis, Julian Nida-Rumelin, Albert Weale, Percy Lehning, Robert Goodin and Ken Binmore
Rousseau : the sentiment of existence by David P Gauthier( Book )
6 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 357 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Rousseau is often portrayed as an educational and social reformer whose aim was to increase individual freedom. In this volume, the distinguished philosopher David Gauthier examines Rousseau's evolving notion of freedom, particularly in his later works, where he focuses on a single quest: Can freedom and the independent self be regained? Rousseau's first answer is given in Emile, where he seeks to create a self-sufficient individual, neither materially nor psychologically enslaved to others. His second answer comes in the Social Contract, where he seeks to create a citizen who identifies totally with his community, so that he experiences his dependence on it only as a dependence on himself. Rousseau implicitly recognized the failure of these solutions. His third answer is one of the main themes of the Confessions and the Reveries, where he creates himself as the man made for a kind of love that merges the selves of the lovers into a single, psychologically sufficient unity that makes each "better than free." But is this response, like others proposed by Rousseau, a chimera?"--BOOK JACKET

"A new day has arrived in how we view mental illness and the recovery process. This DVD, compiled from the 2006 Voices of Resiliency Conference hosted by the Manitoba Schizophrenia Society, features thought-provoking discussions that capture the stories of recovery of individuals living with schizophrenia and depression. A cross-section of people are profiled: six consumers, three family members and two service providers, all of whom offer a deeper insight into what it's like to live with mental illness. They speak candidly about the recovery process, how resiliency is maintained and the important role of family. Throughout the DVD, the viewer will gain a stronger appreciation of some of the elements that make the recovery process possible, as well as those that hinder it."--Container
