Dem besonnenen und umsichtigen Ralph, der zum Anführer gewählt wurde, steht Jack gegenüber, ein rücksichtsloser Verfechter des Recht des Stärkeren, der immer mehr "Jäger" um sich schart. Die Gruppe zerbricht endgültig, als sich ein rettendes Schiff nähert, aber nicht aufmerksam wird, da das Leuchtfeuer erloschen ist. Die eingeteilte Wache hat ihre Pflicht vernachlässigt.
