The author disagrees with some other genealogists about the origin of Thomas Hale of Newbury, Massachusetts. Some others claim he was a son of Richard Hale of King's Walden, Hertfordshire, whose son Thomas was born in 1606. The author claims that Thomas Hale of Newbury was indeed born in 1606, but was the son of Thomas Hale of the parish of Watton (or Watton-at-Stone), Hertfordshire. The author also shows that Joan (Kirby) Hale, widow of Thomas the father, married again to a John (?) Bydes or Bides; and gives some details about the Kirby family in Hertfordshire, who knew and wrote to Governor John Winthrop and his son, John Winthrop Jr
