A passion for discovery by Peter G. O Freund( Book )

13 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book assembles human stories about physicists and mathematicians. Remarkably, these stories cluster around some general themes having to do with the interaction between scientists, and with the impact of historic events such as the advent of fascism and communism in the twentieth century - on scientists' behavior. Briefly, but lucidly, some of the beautiful science that brought these scientists together in the first place is explained."--Jacket
Superstrings by Peter G. O Freund( Book )

14 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 197 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Advancea Kesearch Workshop on Superstrings was held on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder from July 27th through August 1, 1987. Since the work of Green and Schwartz in the summer of 1984, string theories have elicited tremendous amount of interest from both theoretical physicists and mathematicians. The objective of the Workshop was to bring together practitioners in the field to discuss the progress and problems, and possible directions of future research. There were ten talks of one hour each and twenty three talks of one-half hour each. The talks covered new formulations and technical developments. There were intense discussions both during and at the end of the lectures; 'further discussions continued during lunch and dinner. These proceedings contain all talks given at the Workshop except those by Victor Kac, Darwin Chang and Doron Gepner. The Workshop was sponsored by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which provided generous financial support enabling many young physicists from the U.S. and abroad to participate in the Workshop. Additional co-sponsors were the U.S. Department of Energy and the University of Colorado. The former offered further financial assistance and the latter furnished clerical and technical services and its campus facilities for the purpose of the organization and running of the Workshop. The International Organizing Committee consisted of John Ellis, Francois Englert, Peter G.O. Freund (co-director), K.T. Mahanthappa (co-director) and Abdus Salam

Andrew Pickering interviews conducted for his book CONSTRUCTING QUARKS by Andrew Pickering( )

in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Consists of interviews with thirty-six particle physicists, conducted as background material for his book CONSTRUCTING QUARKS: A SOCIOLOGICAL HISTORY OF PARTICLE PHYSICS, published in 1984. Pickering sought to document the founding and growth of research traditions structured around the quark concept, therefore, almost all interviews focused upon the interviewee's overall research career rather than narrowly defined historical episodes. They cover the period from 1964 when the quark model was formulated to 1980 when quark theories had come to dominate research practice in high-energy physics. More specific topics include J/psi color models, Fairbank's fractional charges, and the Price magnetic monopoole. Participants include: Henry Abarbanel, Luis W. Alvarez, Barry Barish, A. O. Barut, John Bell, James Bjorken, Elliott D. Bloom, Gordon Feldman, Geoffrey Chew, Sidney Coleman, A. De Rujula, Sid Drell, John Ellis, P.G.O. Freund, Erwin Gabathuler, Mary Gaillard, H. Georgi, Gerson Goldhaber, Sheldon Glashow, Peter Higgs, Roman Jackiw, R. L. Jaffe, P. V. Langshoff, Ed Lofgren, Seymour Joseph Lindenbaum, Francis Eugene Low, Y. Nambu, Robert B. On the Parity nonconservation induced by the universal Fermi interactions into the pion-nucleon vertex by D Flamm( Book )

1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The problem whether the interpretation of strong interactions as high energy effects of the Universal Fermi Interacti ns (UFI) is consistent with experimental evidence on parity conservation in low energy nuclear physics is investigated. The parity non-conserving part of the one nucleon off shell pi-N vertex, which originates in the UFI (which we consider smeared out with a heavy vector boson of such a mass, that they bind an extreme relativistic nucleon - antinucleon pair into a pion) of the nucleons, is evaluated using dispersion methods and is found to have a relative magnitude of order 1/100,000 10-5 when compared with the parity conserving part. This yields a parity non-conserving pi-N scattering amplitude of the same relative order of magnitude, a result which does not contradict the existing experimental data
