" Zwei Welten begegnen sich, die Abenteurer der Argonauten und Medea, die barbarische Zauberin. Fremdheit herrscht überall, das chaotisch-archaische Prinzip der Frauen, stößt auf die heldische Systematik der Männer. Medea und Jason werden ein Paar, das nicht funktioniert. Der Komponist Hans Thomalla (*1975), eben ausgezeichnet mit dem Förderpreis der Ernst von Siemens-Stiftung, hat die mythischen Wege des Stoffes abgewogen, in Stationen vermessen und zu einem zerbrechlichen Musikdrama zusammengefügt. Verschiedene Schichten der Überlieferung begegnen sich auf schwankendem Grund. Bis zu einer stacheligen >Medea<-Paraphrase frei nach Cherubini wagt sich Hans Thomalla vor. Die Wahrnehmung wird immer wieder aufgebrochen. Trotz der durchaus zentralen Perspektive von Jason und Medea ist das ein kollektives Erzählen mit Musik, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Hauptfigur ist der Chor der Staatsoper Stuttgart, ihm ist das Werk auch gewidmet. Der Chor erscheint als ein Heer von Solisten, jeder hat eine Stimme, jeder kann ein Held sein.
