Mary, a working girl, meets John Sims, a dreamer who believes that luck will eventally bring him success. They marry after their first date--to Coney Island--and honeymoon at Niagara Falls. After 5 years and two children, John, who works as a clerk, has not distinguished himself from the rest of the "crowd." Winning $500 in a slogan contest brightens their lives, but the death of the younger child causes John to become despondent. He and Mary quarrel; he loses his job and becomes a door-to-door salesman; and Mary follows her family's advice to leave him. John is at the point of committing suicide when consideration for his son prevents him. The couple eventually overcome their hardships and finally reunite

John Sims (James Murray) es un joven que encuentra trabajo de contable en una gran empresa de Nueva York. Su vida es monótona y está vacía. De niño siempre soñó con grandes logros, pero por alguna razón parecen eludirlo. Desde la muerte de su padre, con 12 años, tuvo que conformarse con lo que la vida le deparaba. Un día un compañero de trabajo y amigo de la infancia le prepara una cita a ciegas. Es cuando conoce a Mary (Eleanor Boardman) y tras una agradable velada ambos se enamoran y no tardan en casarse. La familia de Mary se opone al matrimonio y la vida de John se vuelve un infierno, pero la llegada de un niño arregla las cosas. Pasan los años y la relación de la pareja es tensa por la falta de logros de John en el trabajo, cuya mediocridad irrita a Mary. La muerte de uno de sus hijos es el detonante para la separación, que llevará a John al borde del suicidio. 'Y el mundo marcha', considerada un mito del cine mudo, recibió en la primera entrega de los premios Oscar (1928) una nominación a la Mejor Dirección para King Vidor
