David was fleeing from slavery, Breck from being the victim of robbery and murder. After a series of adventures in the Scottish Highlands, the two, having fought and made up, return to England where they restore David's estate to him, and Breck leaves to take up the cause of his exiled Stuart king

When she discovers that Charles is unfaithful, she forges a thousand dollar check from Charles to Jimmy, enclosing it in a letter which tells Jimmy to hold the letter over burning sulphur when he succeeds. The burning of the letter reveals a hidden message to Jimmy from Ellen indicating her affection for him
