Wozzeck, a former soldier in the German Armed Forces has had a son by Marie, a former prostitute. Wozzeck takes on numerous menial labour jobs for various members of the Allied Forces personnel, even hiring himself out as a human guinea pig for the Doctor's medical experiments in order to earn a few pennies to feed his family. Under the stress of his existence, he begins to experience strange visions which increasingly preoccupy his thoughts and alienate him from Marie, who consequently succumbs to the sexual advances of the Drum Major. When Wozzeck discovers this deception he kills her and then drowns himself, leaving their son to face the world on his own

Dr. Falke, preparing a surprise at the ball, convinces Eisenstein to come with him that night and delay his departure for jail until morning. Everyone departs for the ball in disguise ... not before Alfred is mistaken for Eisenstein and dragged off to prison! The comic confusion of infidelity and "mistaken" identity is topped off by Dr. Falke's surprise, a little comedy he arranged called "The Bat's Revenge."

Jerome Hines co-stars as the old King Arkel, Golaud and Pelléas's grandfather.This performance is taken from the James Levine 40th anniversary CD box set
