Superstring theory by M Green( Book )

131 editions published between 1986 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,092 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Twenty-five years ago, Michael Green, John Schwarz, and Edward Witten wrote two volumes on string theory. Published during a period of rapid progress in this subject, these volumes were highly influential for a generation of students and researchers. Despite the immense progress that has been made in the field since then, the systematic exposition of the foundations of superstring theory presented in these volumes is just as relevant today as when first published. Volume 2 is concerned with the evaluation of one-loop amplitudes, the study of anomalies and phenomenology. It examines the low energy effective field theory analysis of anomalies, the emergence of the gauge groups E8 x E8 and SO(32) and the four-dimensional physics that arises by compactification of six extra dimensions. Featuring a new Preface setting the work in context in light of recent advances, this book is invaluable for graduate students and researchers in high energy physics and astrophysics, as well as mathematicians

Superstring theory by M Green( )

10 editions published between 1988 and 2012 in English and held by 120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A self-contained introduction to superstrings, Volume 1 begins with an elementary treatment of the bosonic string, before describing the incorporation of additional degrees of freedom: fermionic degrees of freedom leading to supersymmetry and internal quantum numbers leading to gauge interactions. A detailed discussion of the evaluation of tree-approximation scattering amplitudes is also given. Featuring a new preface setting the work in context in light of recent advances, this book is invaluable for graduate students and researchers in general relativity and elementary particle theory
M-theory by E Witten( Visual )

5 editions published between 1998 and 2009 in English and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the problem of unifying quantum mechanics and gravity in a single coherent theory, the M-theory has emerged as a likely candidate. Edward Witten, one of the world's boldest innovators in this field, presents his lecture in completely nontechnical terms not only for mathematics and physics students but also for students with no scientific or mathematical training

An Answer to Everything( Visual )

1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Program 6: We now know that the universe had a beginning and how all the matter formed but there is still one outstanding question: how did the Big Bang begin? Stephen Hawking is joined by other leading scientists as they try to answer this question. Includes discussions of inflation theory, quantum mechanics, and string theory

Einstein's dream( Visual )

2 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This program focuses on efforts to complete Einstein's quest for a grand unifying theory that will explain all of the forces of nature in the same terms. Will string theory provide the key? Mathematical physicist Nathan Seiberg explains his research on string theory in various dimensions and on particle physics; Edward Witten, named one of the 25 most influential Americans by Time magazine, defines M theory; and theoretical physicist Juan Maldacena suggests a way to unite quantum mechanics and general relativity. A contradictory view of string theory is delivered with genial skepticism by Freeman Dyson. Segments highlighting Einstein's research are also included

Axions in String Theory( )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the context of string theory, axions appear to provide the most plausible solution of the strong CP problem. However, as has been known for a long time, in many string-based models, the axion coupling parameter Fa is several orders of magnitude higher than the standard cosmological bounds. We re-examine this problem in a variety of models, showing that Fa is close to the GUT scale or above in many models that have GUT-like phenomenology, as well as some that do not. On the other hand, in some models with Standard Model gauge fields supported on vanishing cycles, it is possible for Fa to be well below the GUT scale
