Notes on Fermat's last theorem by A. J Van Der Poorten( Book )

15 editions published between 1996 and 2007 in English and Japanese and held by 816 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book not only tells us why, in all likelihood, Fermat did not have the proof for his last theorem, it also takes us through historical attempts to crack the theorem, the prizes that were offered along the way, and the consequent motivation for the development of other areas of mathematics. Notes on Fermat's Last Theorem is invaluable for students of mathematics, and of real interest to those in the physical sciences, engineering, and computer sciences - indeed for anyone who craves a glimpse at this fascinating piece of mathematical history

4 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume consists of a selection of papers based on presentations made at the international conference on number theory held in honor of Hugh Williams' sixtieth birthday. The papers address topics in the areas of computational and explicit number theory and its applications. The material is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in number theory."--Jacket

Algorithmic number theory : 8th international symposium, ANTS-VIII, Banff, Canada, May 17-22, 2008 : proceedings by A. J Van Der Poorten( Book )

13 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 98 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Algorithmic Number Theory Symposium, ANTS 2008, held in Banff, Canada, in May 2008. The 28 revised full papers presented together with 2 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on elliptic curves cryptology and generalizations, arithmetic of elliptic curves, integer factorization, K3 surfaces, number fields, point counting, arithmetic of function fields, modular forms, cryptography, and number theory

Computer verification of the Ankeny-Artin-Chowla conjecture for all primes less than 100 000 000 000 by A. J Van Der Poorten( Book )

6 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Let p be a prime congruent to 1 modulo 4 and let t, u be rational integers such that (t+u por raiz de p)/2 is the fundamental unit of the real quadratic field Q (raiz de p). The Ankeny-Artin-Chowla conjecture (AACC) asserts that p will not divide u. This is equivalent to the assertation that p will no divided B sub (p-1)/2, where B sub n denotes the n-th Bernoulli number. Although first published in 1952, this conjecture still remains unproved today. Indeed, it appears to be most difficult to prove. Even testing the conjecture can be quite challenging because of the size of the numbers t, u; for example, when p=40 094 470 441, then both t and u exceed 10 elevado a la 330000. In 1988 the AAC conjecture was verified by computer for all p10 elevado a la 9 . In this paper we describe a new technique for testing the AAC conjecture and we provide some results of a computer run of the method for all primes p up to 100 elevado a la 11

Recurrence sequences by Graham Everest( )

1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Recurrent sequences are of great intrinsic interest and have been a central part of number theory for many years. Moreover, these sequences appear almost everywhere in mathematics and computer science. This book surveys the modern theory of linear recurrence sequences and their generalizations. Particular emphasis is placed on the dramatic impact that sophisticated methods from Diophantine analysis and transcendence theory have had on the subject. Related work on bilinear recurrences and an emerging connection between recurrences and graph theory are covered. Applications and links to other areas of mathematics, including combinatorics, dynamical systems and cryptography, and to computer science are described
