This handsome volume features 80 paintings, prints, and drawings - more than 50 in full color - related to Kent's sojourns in the wilderness. Included in this collection are several paintings from the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg that have not been seen by audiences outside of Russia in more than 40 years. Kent's dramatic black and white illustrations for the 1930 edition of Herman Melville's Moby Dick - still considered an American classic - are also featured. "American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell explores Norman Rockwell's unparalleled role as an American icon-maker and storyteller. The book, a catalogue to a special exhibition at the Norman Rockwell Museum, traces the evolution of Rockwell's art and iconography throughout his career - from carefully choreographed reflections on childhood innocence in such paintings as No Swimming (1921) to powerful, consciousness-raising images like The Problem We All Live With (1964), which documented the traumatic realities of desegregation in the South." "American Chronicles demonstrates how Rockwell's images provided Americans with a vocabulary for describing and celebrating themselves, their country, and their experiences in the twentieth century. Written in an engaging style and from an insider's point of view, the book begins with Rockwell's early life, student years, and career in Manhattan, Mamaroneck, and New Rochelle, New York. In subsequent chapters, the author explores Rockwell's life and artworks when he lived in Arlington, Vermont, and later in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where he enjoyed the life of a famous working artist for his last 25 years."--Jacket

Twentieth-century American society wittily and ironically portrayed by a great artist. Norman Rockwell (1894-1978), one of the most popular American artists of the past century, has often been regarded as a simple illustrator and had his work identified with the covers of the Saturday Evening Post. He is, instead, a total artist. An acute observer of human nature and talented storyteller, Rockwell captured America's evolving society in small details and nuances, portraying scenes of the everyday life of ordinary people and presenting a personal and often idealized interpretation of the American identity. His images offered a reassuring visual haven in a period of epoch-making transformation that led to the birth of the modern American society. The art of Norman Rockwell entered the homes of millions of Americans for over fifty years, illustrating the Roaring Twenties, the Depression, World War II, and the 1950s and 1960s. His works mirror aspects of the life of average Americans with precise realism and often in a humorous light. The exhibition catalog organized in collaboration with the Norman Rockwell Museum of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, presents well-known and beloved masterpieces like the 'Triple Self-Portrait' (1960), 'Girl at the Mirror' (1954), and 'The Art Critic' (1955) alongside carefully observed images of youthful innocence ('No Swimming', 1921) and paintings with a powerful social message like 'The Problem We All Live With' (1964)

Maxfield Parrish : a retrospective by Laurence S Cutler( Book )

Maxfield Parrish has long been considered one of the greatest American illustrators of the twentieth century. In the early 1920s, when his works Garden of Allah and Daybreak were reproduced as art prints, he quickly became one of the best known and most beloved artists America had known and most beloved artists America had known or would ever know. His unmistakable paintings - characterized by "Parrish blue" water and skies, luminescent rocks and hills, and perfect-looking young women draped in flowing, classically inspired garments - are infused with a romantic and paradisiacal quality so entrancing that today's reproductions of them elicit the same infectious enthusiasm as when the first prints were released over seventy years ago. Until Judy Goffman Cutler, coauthor of this book, curated the international exhibit "Maxfield Parrish: A Retrospective," Parrish's paintings had rarely been shown as a group of fine art pieces, and because of this Parrish had been considered by critics to be "merely" an illustrator. The exhibition and this book serve to change that impression, with a presentation of paintings and drawings that embody the artist's long career and extraordinary accomplishments. Many of the artworks that appear in Maxfield Parrish: A Retrospective, have never been reproduced before. Other plates are especially significant because they reproduce for the first time the original painting - rather than prints made from them. Included are over 130 color plates and more than thirty black-and-white illustrations and historical photographs, along with an essay from Joanna Maxfield Parrish, the artist's granddaughter, and text by Laurence S. Cutler and Judy Goffman Cutler of the American Illustrators Gallery in New York City. Maxfield Parrish is one of America's greatest cultural treasures. Maxfield Parrish: A Retrospective, published in honor of the 125th anniversary of his birth, places his magnificent body of work in just that context. -- from dust jacket
