An up-to-date and integrated introduction to model theory, designed to be used for graduate courses (for students who are familiar with first-order logic), and as a reference for more experienced logicians and mathematicians

Logic by Wilfrid Hodges( Book )
46 editions published between 1977 and 2001 in 4 languages and held by 560 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
If a man supports Arsenal one day and Spurs the next then he is fickle but not necessarily illogical. From this starting point, and assuming no previous knowledge of logic, Wilfrid Hodges takes the reader through the whole gamut of logical expressions in a simple and lively way. Readers who are more mathematically adventurous will find optional sections introducing rather more challenging material

Logic, language, information and computation 15th international workshop, WoLLIC 2008, Edinburgh, UK, July 1-4, 2008 : proceedings by Wilfrid Hodges( )
15 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 463 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Annotation Edited in collaboration with FoLLI, the Association of Logic, Language and Information, this book constitutes the4th volume of the FoLLI LNAI subline; containing the refereed proceedings of the 15th International Workshop on Logic, Language, Information and Computation, WoLLIC 2008, held in Edinburgh, UK, in July 2008. The 21 revised full papers presented together with the abstracts of 7 tutorials and invited lectures were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers cover all pertinent subjects in computer science with particular interest in cross-disciplinary topics. Typical areas of interest are: foundations of computing and programming; novel computation models and paradigms; broad notions of proof and belief; formal methods in software and hardware development; logical approach to natural language and reasoning; logics of programs, actions and resources; foundational aspects of information organization, search, flow, sharing, and protection

Mathematical Logic. Oxford Texts in Logic, Volume 3 ( )
1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Assuming no previous study in logic, this informal yet rigorous text covers the material of a standard undergraduate first course in mathematical logic, using natural deduction and leading up to the completeness theorem for first-order logic. At each stage of the text, the reader is given an intuition based on standard mathematical practice, which is subsequently developed with clean formal mathematics. Alongside the practical examples, readers learn what can and can't be calculated; for example the correctness of a derivation proving a given sequent can be tested mechanically, but there is no general mechanical test for the existence of a derivation proving the given sequent. The undecidability results are proved rigorously in an optional final chapter, assuming Matiyasevich's theorem characterising the computably enumerable relations. Rigorous proofs of the adequacy and completeness proofs of the relevant logics are provided, with careful attention to the languages involved. Optional sections discuss the classification of mathematical structures by first-order theories; the required theory of cardinality is developed from scratch.; Throughout the book there are notes on historical aspects of the material, and connections with linguistics and computer science, and the discussion of syntax and semantics is influenced by modern linguistic approaches. Two basic themes in recent cognitive science studies of actual human reasoning are also introduced. Including extensive exercises and selected solutions, this text is ideal for students in Logic, Mathematics, Philosophy, and Computer Science

Games that solve problems ( Visual )
1 edition published in 1988 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
Mathematicians don't just solve problems. They also find methods for solving new kinds of problems. How can they do this? This lecture describes various attempts to answer this question during the last 150 years. One important recent approach is based on a kind of "spot the difference" game; simple examples are given. Prerequisites: an interest in abstract ideas and patterns
