Charlotte Perriand : an art of living by Charlotte Perriand( Book )

4 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 418 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) was one of the most innovative furniture and interior designers of the twentieth century. Although her work has long been recognized by furniture historians and Le Corbusier specialists, Perriand's pioneering role has only recently become more widely appreciated. Her long career embraced much of the history of modern design in France, including Art Deco, machine-age modernism, the organic rusticity of the 1930s and 1940s, serially produced metal and wood furniture of the 1950s and 1960s, and plastic and prefabricated bathroom and kitchen units of the 1970s. Perriand collaborated with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret on the creation of their famous "LC" furniture and was responsible for the design of many of their major interiors. After 1938, she also worked frequently with Jean Prouve, developing a series of innovative modular storage units and low-cost residential furnishings. Apart from these collaborations, Perriand had her own practice, which encompassed a wide range of projects and countries, from a chaise lounge to a ski resort, from France to Japan, Vietnam, Congo, and Brazil." "Many of Perriand's pieces are now seen as classics of modern furniture. However, she saw her designs not merely as elegant objects but as part of a larger social program to extend the pleasures of modern life (what she called "l'art de vivre") to working-and middle-class people. Perriand sought to create a vibrant, accessible art that rejected bourgeois conventions while humanizing everyday environments. Her designs and her career also exemplify a radical rethinking of gender roles." "Charlotte Perriand: An Art of Living is the first book in English on this important figure in the history of twentieth-century design. Mary McLeod has assembled a collection of essays that elucidate Perriand's rich, diverse career and the ways in which it intersects with contemporary cultural currents, political movements, and changing social and economic conditions."--Jacket
A life of creation : an autobiography by Charlotte Perriand( Book )

19 editions published between 1998 and 2009 in 4 languages and held by 295 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Le destin hors du commun de cette femme qui occupa une place centrale dans l'histoire des arts décoratifs et de l'architecture, liée à Jean Prouvé, Fernand Léger, Pierre Jeanneret, mais surtout célèbre pour sa collaboration avec Le Corbusier, dans l'atelier duquel elle travailla entre 1927 et 1937
Le Corbusier : furniture and interiors 1905-1965 by Le Corbusier( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 171 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Le Corbusier, one of the world's most important and influential architects and accomplished visual artists, has also created a vast oeuvre of interior and furniture designs. The chaise-longue LC4, the armchair LC2 or the sling chair LC1, created in cooperation with Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, have become icons of 20th-century design. Le Corbusier's contribution to modern interior design, though, reaches far beyond these well-known classics. The vast part of his work as a young architect from 1912-16 was in interior and furniture design. From the early 1920s he developed a particular interest in fitting of residential buildings with indispensable pieces of furniture, eventually leading to the legendary metal-tube types. After the second World War, he turned back to less refined, almost primitive designs more suitable for most peoples elementary everyday requirements. The new book 'Le Corbusier. Furniture and interiors 1905-1965' is both a comprehensive monograph of his work in interior design and a Catalogue Raisonne. The main essay is richly illustrated and arranged in four chronological parts: I) Charles-Edouard Jeanneret (1905 - 17); II) Le Corbusier & Pierre Jeanneret (1922 - 27); III) le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret & Charlotte Perriand (1927 - 37); IV) Le Corbusier (1938 - 65). All items in the Catalogue Raisonne section are documented with images and a wealth of detailed information highly valuable for art historians, dealers and collectors alike." --Publisher description

"A major figure of modernism in the 1930s and inextricably linked with the name of Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand was also a major protagonist of the organis forms of the 1950s. She was not only a pioneer of design in the twentieth century, but also a free spirited, generous woman with a fascinating story. We owe her credit for her design contributions promoting a very functional way of everyday life. Today, she has been rediscovered for much of her vital energy as for the simple, precise, natural shapes of her furniture and integrated spaces." --Publisher description

The acclaimed French designer Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) worked in the studio of Le Corbusier in the late 1920s together with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. The famous Corbusier furniture pieces are the result of this unique collaboration. A facsimile reproduction of Charlotte Perriand's 140 page Livre de Bord, her sketchbook during the years 1927-1933, is the centrepiece of this publication. Arthur Ruegg's introductory essay brings to life in text and image those pioneering years.
