Nanosystems : molecular machinery, manufacturing, and computation by K. Eric Drexler( Book )

15 editions published in 1992 in English and Undetermined and held by 756 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Nanosystems then applies the analytical tools and concepts developed in the first section to the design of nanomechanical components, devices, and systems. It describes nanomechanical gears, bearings, motors, sensors, logic gates, submicron 1000 MIPS computers (consuming 10[superscript -8] times as much power as comparable computers today), and systems able to join simple molecules to build complex products. The last section discusses how chemical, biochemical, and proximal probe technologies can be used to build complex molecular objects and how this capability can be used to implement molecular manufacturing." "Bringing together physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, and computer science, Nanosystems provides an indispensable introduction to the emerging field of molecular nanotechnology."--Jacket
Radical abundance : how a revolution in nanotechnology will change civilization by K. Eric Drexler( Book )

8 editions published in 2013 in English and Dutch and held by 562 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book the author and founding father of nanotechnology, the science of engineering on a molecular level, predicts the coming changes to the economy and the environment as more manufacturing is done with extreme precision on the atomic level at a significantly lower cost. Author of the influential book Engines of Creation he explores the coming revolution in nano-scale engineering, and how it will change the world as we know it. Here he shows how rapid scientific progress is about to change our world. Thanks to atomically precise manufacturing, we will soon have the power to produce radically more of what people want, and at a lower cost. The result will shake the very foundations of our economy and environment. Already, scientists have constructed prototypes for circuit boards built of millions of precisely arranged atoms. The advent of this kind of atomic precision promises to change the way we make things cleanly, inexpensively, and on a global scale. It allows us to imagine a world where solar arrays cost no more than cardboard and aluminum foil, and laptops cost about the same. This provocative tour of cutting edge science and its implications by the field's founder and master, this book offers a mind-expanding vision of a world hurtling toward an unexpected future

Nanotopia( Visual )

2 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in Undetermined and English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An overview of the science of nanotechnology, which aims to develop means of rearranging matter at the atomic or molecular level via the use of microscopic machines ('nanomachines'). Implications for manufacturing are discussed, as well as aspects of the related field of molecular electronics. Eric Drexler, author of "Engines of creation", and regarded as the father of nanotechnology, is one of the scientists and engineers who appear discussing the science and their views about its future
Petit à petit by Jean Rouch( Visual )

2 editions published between 2009 and 2015 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Told with a great deal of charm and humour, the film is another masterpiece by Rouch, exploring social change in Africa. The story centres on the aspirations of a group of young men in the city of Naimey in Niger who have a flourishing import-export company called Petit a Petit. Not to be outdone by a competitor who plans to build a skyscraper, two of the men from Petit a Petit decide to fly to Paris to study high-rise buildings and to observe what use Parisians make of them. In imitation of zethnography" done by white anthropologists in their home country, Tamoure and his friend make their own study of Parisians and their life-style ? measuring their bodies and skulls with calipers, making observations of their clothing and manners, their diet and their cars. They befriend a Senegalese woman (played by Safi Faye who was soon to become a significant filmmaker in Senegal), a Parisian typist and a drunken hobo, and decide to take them all back to Naimey to be part of their life there. The social experiment fails, however, and all three visitors are unhappy and soon leave. Reflecting that travel makes us see too many things, Tamoure decides to abandon his business and his office and return to a more traditional life-style, living in a hut made of bush materials instead of dreaming of a skyscraper

Flying cars, space travel for everyone, the elimination of poverty and hunger, and powerful new tools to combat disease and even fight aging - these are some of the amazing predicted developments of nanotechnology, the emerging science of designing and building machines at the molecular and atomic levels. [In this book, the author] explains how nanotechnology will make possible many of the science fiction dreams of the past. [In the book, he also] analyzes the benefits as well as the potential risks.-Dust jacket
