Electromagnetic Wave Propagation and Source Radiation in Space-Time Periodic Media by Charles Elachi ( Book )
2 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The electromagnetic wave equations for the fields, potentials, and Hertz vectors are derived and a Lorentz gauge is given for space-time dependent media. Electromagnetic wave propagation, electric and magnetic dipole radiation, and Cerenkov and transition radiation in sinusoidally space-time periodic dielectric, plasma, and uniaxial plasma are studied and numerous radiation patterns are given. Finally the study is extended to general space-time periodic media. (Author)

Interview with Charles Elachi by Charles Elachi ( )
1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
In the first of two interviews with Elachi in 2004 for Westwick's book Into the Black, Elachi talks about first learning about JPL while growing up in Lebanon, how he got a job at the Lab while working on a PhD at Caltech, and his experience in various radar studies including the Planetary Imaging Radar System (PIRS), Venus Orbiting Imaging Radar (VOIR), Seasat, and Shuttle imaging radars SIR-A, SIR-B, and SIR-C. He discusses the change from surface oceanography to space oceanography. He describes the role of scientists and engineers, the creation of the Office of Space Science and Instruments, and finding ways to provide more stability for scientists having to compete for projects. He discusses the changing demographics of the JPL workforce and the relationship with Caltech and NASA, including recent contract negotiations

Types of Interactions in Space-Time Periodic Media ( Book )
1 edition published in 1971 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
The interaction regions between two successive modes in a space-time periodic medium (i.e., epsilon, N = epsilon sub o epsilon sub r, N sub o(1+alpha sub 1f(Kz-omega t)) where f(xi) is a periodic function) are studied. Geometrical criteria to determine the type of the interactions (stop-band, passive, amplifying or self-oscillating) from the (alpha sub 1 tends to o) Brillouin diagram are derived by using a first order Taylor series development in alpha sub 1. These criteria are applied to the cases of sinusoidally space-time periodic dielectric, plasma and uniaxial plasma; then the criteria are generalized for the case of generally space-time periodic media. Multistream Interactions in Stratified and Space-Time Periodic Media ( Book )
1 edition published in 1972 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
Multistream interactions are studied when the propagation medium (dielectric or plasma) is stratified or space-time periodic (i.e., the medium parameters behave like alpha(z, t) = (alpha sub 0) (1+eta f(Kz-omega t)) where f(xi) is a periodic function). The space-time periodicity can be considered as due to a strong pump wave. The types of interactions were determined using different methods: Taylor series development, power flow method (with conservation of energy and momentum), and a numerical method based on the wave equation solution. The Brillouin diagram in the limit eta approaches 0 is used to investigate different aspects of the problem without extensive computations. It is found that all types of interactions, stable and unstable, can occur even if they did not exist in the homogeneous case. (Author)
