Second issue of the first edition. This publication is the most important work relating to American trees prior to the 20th century. It is the product of the efforts of two of the greatest naturalists to work in 19th-century America, Francois A. Michaux and Thomas Nuttall. Michaux's work is based on his extensive travels in the eastern half of America, and those of his father, from the 1790s on. Both men were friendly with Jefferson and other leading figures, who aided them in their work and travels. The first edition of his work was published in Paris in 1817-19, although bearing a Philadelphia imprint. The plates were executed by the great French flower painter, Redouté, and his associate, Bessa and shipped to America. Later the copperplates were sent over as well. The sheets of the first effort at reprinting the work were destroyed by fire, but the copper plates were separately stored and thus survived to be employed in later editions in Philadelphia. There are numerous American editions using these plates. The first American edition of Michaux was issued at New Harmony in 1841 and reissued with cancel title in Cincinnati in 1842. This second edition was reissued using the same plates until 1856, when a fire destroyed the text plates but not the Redouté coppers. The third American edition began in 1857 and was also reissued several times. Thomas Nuttall was one of the most intrepid American naturalists of his day, travelling extensively in the Mississippi Valley and the Far West in the 1820s and '30s to gather botanical specimens. His work, designed to supplement that of Michaux, covers eastern species overlooked by the Frenchman, and new species Nuttall had gathered in the Midwest and West. His work was first published in Philadelphia in 1842-49. The more up-to-date method of using colored lithographs for the plates was employed in the Nuttall volumes, since the publisher did not have engraved plates in stock, as was the case with the Michaux work. The Nuttall was also reprinted a number of times, in uniform editions with the Michaux

A hybrid of the first American Michaux and Nuttall, comprised of a fragment of the first volume of the first edition of the Nuttall, bound with the second and third volumes of the first American edition of the Michaux. MacPhail's Michaux entry 21a corresponds to the two Michaux volumes herein, except that he gives an imprint date of 1841. The first titlepage of the Michaux in hand is not dated on the titlepage, but bears a date of 1841 on the verso; and the titlepage of the second volumes bears a date of 1842 (which MacPhail dates 1841). All Michaux plates for the second and third volumes are present, numbered 51 through 100 in volume two and 101-156 in volume three. MacPhail generally categorizes the Michaux plates as "stipple engravings, color-printed, retouched by hand."
