Sigurd Lewerentz (1885-1975) was initially educated as mechanical engineer in Gothenburg. Yet it was his architectural apprenticeship in Munich 1909-10 that set him on his path as an architect, opening his own office in Stockholm in 1911. Although his built work is relatively small, Lewerentz is revered as one of Sweden's most eminent architects. Cemeteries and sacred buildings became a core part of Lewerentz's oeuvre, including Stockholm's South Cemetery (1914-17), Malmo Eastern Cemetery (1916), St. Mark's Church, Bjorkhagen (1956), and Petri Church, Klippan (1963). In association with Gunnar Asplund, he was also the main architect for the Stockholm International Exhibition (1930), and in collaboration with Erik Lallerstedt and David Hellden he created a masterpiece of functionalist architecture, the Malmo City Theatre (1935). Sigurd Lewerentz, Architect is a reprint of the first ever monograph on his work, originally published in English 1987 and long out of print. It tells the story of Lewerentz's life and presents his entire work in text and many photographs, drawings and plans

Sigurd Lewerentz (1885?1975) was educated as a mechanical engineer at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, but it was an architectural apprenticeship in Munich that set him on his career path?a path that led him to be revered as one of Sweden?s most eminent architects. Sigurd Lewerentz, architect is a new facsimile-reprint of the first monograph ever written on Lewerentz and his work. Originally published in 1985 in Swedish, this legendary book tells the story of his life and presents his entire body of work through a combination of texts, photographs, drawings, and plans. This edition sets Lewerentz in a contemporary context through a concluding essay on his work and legacy by the German-Chinese architect, critic, and professor Wilfried Wang
Sigurd Lewerentz by Sigurd Lewerentz( Book )

5 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sigurd Lewerentz (1885 - 1975) was one of the major Swedish architects of the twentieth century and was particularly known for his important religious works. This definitive monograph is the only comprehensive survey of his work, celebrating his sensitive and distinctive response to modernism in a detailed survey of both built and planned projects. These span his embrace and rejection of the classical language of architecture and his turn instead towards modernism and a more austere design vocabulary. The book includes his best-known chapels of St Knut and St Gertrud in the Malmo cemetry (begun in 1916), the conversion of the cathedral in Uppsala, on which he worked for nearly ten years (1947 - 55), and the church of St Peter at Klippan (1962 - 6). The first section of the volume includes essays on Lewerentz's work by the late Colin St John Wilson and the editors Nicola Flora, Paolo Giardiello and Gennaro Postiglione, plus a text on cemeteries by Lewerentz that is the only known piece of writing by the architect. The central section contains a catalogue of Lewerentz's works presenting around 150 designs and constructions in chronological order with detailed descriptions, photographs and drawings. An anthology of criticisms includes a text by the renowned architect Alison Smithson. A complete list of works and a bibliography based on research in the archives of Stockholm's Museum of Architecture conclude the volume
