Greek thought : a guide to classical knowledge( Book )

12 editions published between 1996 and 2000 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,343 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ancient Greek thought is the essential wellspring from which the intellectual, ethical, and political civilization of the West draws and to which, even today, we repeatedly return. In more than sixty essays by an international team of scholars, this volume explores the full breadth and reach of Greek thought -- investigating what the Greeks knew as well as what they thought about what they knew, and what they believed, invented, and understood about the conditions and possibilities of knowing. Calling attention to the characteristic reflexivity of Greek thought, the analysis in this book reminds us of what our own reflections owe to theirs."--Jacket

Passions & perceptions : studies in Hellenistic philosophy of mind : proceedings of the Fifth Symposium Hellenisticum by Jacques Brunschwig( Book )

30 editions published between 1992 and 2011 in English and French and held by 405 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The philosophers of the Hellenistic schools in ancient Greece and Rome (Epicureans, Stoics, Sceptics, Academics, Cyrenaics) made important contributions to the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of psychology. This volume, which contains the proceedings of the Fifth Symposium Hellenisticum, describes and analyses their contributions on issues such as: the nature of perception, imagination and belief; the nature of the passions and their role in action; the relationship between mind and body; freedom and determinism; the role of pleasure as a goal; the effects of poetry on belief and passion. Written with a high level of historical and philosophical scholarship, the essays are intended both for classicists and for nonspecialists interested in the philosophy of mind."--Jacket
Papers in Hellenistic philosophy by Jacques Brunschwig( Book )

16 editions published between 1994 and 2009 in English and held by 337 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This collection makes available in English twelve papers by the distinguished French scholar Professor Jacques Brunschwig. The essays deal with problems arising in the texts and doctrines of the three major philosophical schools of the Hellenistic period - Epicureanism, Stoicism and Scepticism. The author's strategy is to focus on some specific problem and then to enlarge the conclusion of his discussion so as to reformulate or reassess some more important issue. The main subjects tackled are: problems in Epicurean cosmology and linguistic theory; aspects of Stoic logic, ontology and theology; the history of Scepticism; and analysis of some of the conceptual tools used by the Sceptics in their anti-dogmatic arguments
New essays on human understanding by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz( Book )

26 editions published between 1935 and 1999 in French and Undetermined and held by 155 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the New Essays on Human Understanding, Leibniz argues chapter by chapter with John Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding, challenging his views about knowledge, personal identity, God, morality, mind and matter, nature versus nurture, logic and language, and a host of other topics. The work is a series of sharp, deep discussions by one great philosopher of the work of another. Leibniz's references to his contemporaries and his discussions of the ideas and institutions of the age make this a fascinating and valuable document in the history of ideas. The work was originally written in French, and the version by Peter Remnant and Jonathan Bennett, based on the only reliable French edition (published in 1962), first appeared in 1981 and has become the standard English translation. It has been thoroughly revised for this series and provided with a new and longer introduction, a chronology on Leibniz's life and career and a guide to further reading

Early Greek science: Thales to Aristotle by G. E. R Lloyd( Book )

4 editions published between 1974 and 1990 in French and Spanish and held by 148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Although there is no exact equivalent of our term 'science' in Greek, Western science may still be said to have originated with the Greeks, for they were the first to attempt to explain natural phenomena consistently in naturalistic terms, and they initiated the practice of rational criticism of scientific theories. This study traces Greek science through the work of the Pythagoreans, the Presocratic natural philosophers, the Hippocratic writers, Plato, the fourth-century B.C astronomers, and Aristotle. [The author] also investigates the relationship between science and philosophy and science and medicine; he discusses the social and economic setting of early Greek science; and he analyzes the motives and incentives of the different groups of writers"--Back cover

Greek science after Aristotle by G. E. R Lloyd( Book )

2 editions published in 1990 in French and held by 92 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In his previous volume in this series, 'Early Greek science : Thales to Aristotle', [the author] pointed out that although there is no exact equivalent to our term 'science' in Greek, Western science may still be said to originate with the Greeks. In this new volume, the author continues his discussion of the fundamental Greek contributions to science, drawing on the richer literary and archaeological sources for the period after Aristotle. Particular attention is paid to the Greeks' conceptions of the inquiries they were engaged on, and to the interrelations of science and philosophy, science and religion, and science and technology. In the first part of the book the author considers the two hundred years after the death of Aristotle, devoting separate chapters to mathematics, astronomy, and biology. He goes on to deal with Ptolemy and Galen and concludes with a discussion of later writers and of the problems raised by the question of the decline of ancient science"--Back cover
