Extended irreversible thermodynamics by
D Jou(
Book
)
70 editions published between 1988 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 718 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This is the 4th edition of the highly acclaimed monograph on Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics, a theory that goes beyond the classical theory of irreversible processes. In contrast to the classical approach, the basic variables describing the system are complemented by nonequilibrium quantities. The claims made for extended thermodynamics are confirmed by the kinetic theory of gases and statistical mechanics. The book covers a wide spectrum of applications, and also contains a thorough discussion of the foundations and the scope of the current theories on nonequilibrium thermodynamics. For this new edition, the authors critically revised existing material while taking into account the most recent developments in fast moving fields such as heat transport in micro and nanosystems or fast solidification fronts in materials sciences. Several fundamental chapters have been revisited emphasizing physics and applications over mathematical derivations. Also, fundamental questions on the definition of nonequilibrium temperature, entropy, fluctuations of fluxes and boundary conditions are revisited and presented in a modern way. Detailed solutions for more than 130 problem sets presented in this book, as well as a wide bibliography on extended irreversible thermodynamics are accessible at the http://telemaco.uab.es site."Publisher's website

J CasasVázquez(
Book
)
18 editions published between 1991 and 2014 in English and held by 208 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The pedagogically presented lectures deal with viscoelastic behaviour of fluids, the compatibility of rheological theories with nonequilibrium thermodynamics, fluids under shear, and polymer behaviour in solution and in biological systems. The main aims of the book are to stress the importance of the study of rheological systems for statistical physics and nonequilibrium thermodynamics and to present recent results in rheological modelling. The book will be a valuable source for both students and researchers

Understanding nonequilibrium thermodynamics : foundations, applications, frontiers by
G Lebon(
Book
)
22 editions published between 2007 and 2010 in English and held by 140 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book offers a homogeneous presentation of the many faces of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. The first part is devoted to a description of the nowadays thermodynamic formalism recognized as the classical theory of nonequilibrium processes. This part of the book may serve as a basis to an introductory course dedicated to firstyear graduate students in sciences and engineering. The classical description can however not be complete, as it rests on the hypothesis of local equilibrium. This has fostered the development of many theories going beyond local equilibrium and which cannot be put aside. The second part of the book is concerned with these different approaches, and will be of special interest for PhD students and researchers. For the sake of homogeneity, the authors have used the general structure and methods presented in the first part. Indeed, besides their differences, all these formalisms are not closed boxes but present some overlappings and parallelisms which are emphasized in this book. For pedagogical reasons, some problems have been analysed within the different formalisms to underline their differences and their convergences

El gran diseño by
Stephen Hawking(
)
5 editions published between 2010 and 2015 in Spanish and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Along with Caltech physicist Mlodinow (The Drunkard's Walk), University of Cambridge cosmologist Hawking (A Brief History of Time) deftly mixes cuttingedge physics to answer three key questions Why is there something rather than nothing? Why do we exist? Why this particular set of laws and not some other? and explains that scientists are approaching what is called "Mtheory," a collection of overlapping theories (including string theory) that fill in many (but not all) the blank spots in quantum physics. This collection is known as the "Grand Unified Field Theories."

Mesoscopic theories of heat transport in nanosystems by Antonio Sellitto(
Book
)
6 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book presents generalized heatconduction laws which, from a mesoscopic perspective, are relevant to new applications (especially in nanoscale heat transfer, nanoscale thermoelectric phenomena, and in diffusivetoballistic regime) and at the same time keep up with the pace of current microscopic research. The equations presented in the book are compatible with generalized formulations of nonequilibrium thermodynamics, going beyond the localequilibrium. The book includes six main chapters, together with a preface and a final section devoted to the future perspectives, as well as an extensive bibliography
