Statistical mechanics : rigorous results by David Ruelle( Book )

64 editions published between 1900 and 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 745 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This classic book marks the beginning of an era of vigorous mathematical progress in equilibrium statistical mechanics. Its treatment of the infinite system limit has not been superseded, and the discussion of thermodynamic functions and states remains basic for more recent work. The conceptual foundation provided by the Rigorous Results remains invaluable for the study of the spectacular developments of statistical mechanics in the second half of the 20th century
Chaotic evolution and strange attractors : the statistical analysis of time series for deterministic nonlinear systems by David Ruelle( Book )

29 editions published between 1987 and 2003 in English and held by 708 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The mathematician's brain by David Ruelle( Book )

28 editions published between 2007 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 670 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Mathematician's Brain poses a provocative question about the world's most brilliant yet eccentric mathematical minds: were they brilliant because of their eccentricities or in spite of them? In this book, David Ruelle, the mathematical physicist who helped create chaos theory, gives us an insider's account of the celebrated mathematicians he has known-their quirks, oddities, personal tragedies, bad behavior, descents into madness, tragic ends, and the sublime, inexpressible beauty of their most breathtaking mathematical discoveries. Ruelle holds nothing back in his revealing and deeply personal reflections on mathematicians such as Alan Turing, Alexander Grothendieck, Rene Thom, Bernhard Riemann, and Felix Klein. Each chapter examines an important mathematical idea and the visionary minds behind it. Ruelle explores the philosophical issues raised by each, offering insights into the truly unique and creative ways mathematicians think and showing how the mathematical setting is most favorable for asking philosophical questions about meaning, beauty, and the nature of reality
Elements of differentiable dynamics and bifurcation theory by David Ruelle( Book )

20 editions published between 1988 and 2014 in English and Italian and held by 665 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book provides a rigorous introduction to differentiable dynamics--the mathematical theory underlying chaos and strange attractors. These and related concepts have come to play a key role in physics with the theory of hydrodynamic turbulence, in the natural sciences of meteorology and ecology, and in economics. The basic concepts of differentiable dynamics are presented as they apply to natural phenomena, emphasizing infinite dimensional systems, non-invertible maps, attractors, and bifurcation theory. The book also includes a series of detailed problems as well as appendices that provide both general references and advanced information
Thermodynamic formalism : the mathematical structures of classical equilibrium statistical mechanics by David Ruelle( Book )

Dynamical zeta functions for piecewise monotone maps of the interval by David Ruelle( Book )

Thermodynamic formalism : the mathematical structures of equilibrium statistical mechanics by David Ruelle( Book )

13 editions published in 2004 in English and Undetermined and held by 203 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Reissued in the Cambridge Mathematical Library this classic book outlines the theory of thermodynamic formalism which was developed to describe the properties of certain physical systems consisting of a large number of subunits. It is aimed at mathematicians interested in ergodic theory, topological dynamics, constructive quantum field theory, the study of certain differentiable dynamical systems, notably Anosov diffeomorphisms and flows. It is also of interest to theoretical physicists concerned with the conceptual basis of equilibrium statistical mechanics. The level of the presentation is generally advanced, the objective being to provide an efficient research tool and a text for use in graduate teaching. Background material on mathematics has been collected in appendices to help the reader. Extra material is given in the form of updates of problems that were open at the original time of writing and as a new preface specially written for this new edition by the author
Turbulence, strange attractors, and chaos by David Ruelle( Book )

12 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 165 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The present collection of reprints covers the main contributions of David Ruelle, and coauthors, to the theory of chaos and its applications. Several of the papers reproduced here are classics in the field. Others (that were published in less accessible places) may still surprise the reader. The collection contains mathematical articles relevant to chaos, specific articles on the theory, and articles on applications to hydrodynamical turbulence, chemical oscillations, etc. A sound judgment of the value of techniques and applications is crucial in the interdisciplinary field of chaos. For a critical assessment of what has been achieved in this area, the present volume is an invaluable contribution

Lectures in modern analysis and applications by C. T Taam( )

4 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A Lecture Series in Modern Analysis and Applications was sponsored by the Consortium of American, Catholic, Georgetown, George Washington and Howard Universities, of the District of Columbia, the University of Maryland, College Park, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, in the greater Washington, D.C. area, during the period Fall, 1967 through Spring 1969. The series consisted of 8 sessions of 3 lectures each. Each session was devoted to an active basic area of contemporary analysis which is important in application or shows potential applications. Each lecture presented a survey and a critical review of certain aspects of that area, with emphasis on new results, open problems and applications. This volume, the third and final one of the series, contains five lectures from the seventh and eighth sessions, which were devoted to modern harmonic analysis and applications, and integration in function spaces and applications. The lectures concern the Littlewood-Paley Theory, the Theory of Automorphic Forms, Quantization and Unitary Representations, Random Linear Functionals, and the Absolute Continuity of Stochastic Processes. Equilibrium states and the ergodic theory of Anosov diffeomorphisms by Rufus Bowen( Book )

3 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For this printing of R. Bowen's book, J.-R. Chazottes has retyped it in TeX for easier reading, thereby correcting typos and bibliographic details. From the Preface by D. Ruelle: "Rufus Bowen has left us a masterpiece of mathematical exposition ... Here a number of results which were new at the time are presented in such a clear and lucid style that Bowen's monograph immediately became a classic. More than thirty years later, many new results have been proved in this area, but the volume is as useful as ever because it remains the best introduction to the basics of the ergodic theory of hyperbolic systems."
