The author, Hikozō Hamada, together with 16 others, was shipwrecked in the Pacific in 1850, rescued by an American ship, later sailed to San Francisco, and traveled extensively in the United States. In Baltimore, he converted to Catholicism with the baptismal name Joseph Heco, and became the first Japanese person to be naturalized as a United States citizen. He left the United States in 1858, returned 1861-1862, and then returned permanently to Japan. His diary up to that point, corresponding to v. 1 of this publication, was published in Japan under the title Hyōryūki Tokyo: Maruzen, 1863); it includes his experiences in San Francisco, Baltimore, New York, and Washington, D.C. (including a meeting with Abraham Lincoln), trips by train and notes on the Civil War (with sympathetic passages about the Confederacy and slavery). Volume 2 continues the diary to 28 October 1891, and includes an eyewitness account of key events in the Revolution of 1868
