Characteristic classes and the cohomology of finite groups by
C. B Thomas(
Book
)
16 editions published between 1986 and 2008 in English and held by 322 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The purpose of this book is to study the relation between the representation ring of a finite group and its integral cohomology by means of characteristic classes. In this way it is possible to extend the known calculations and prove some general results for the integral cohomology ring of a group G of prime power order. Among the groups considered are those of prank less than 3, extraspecial pgroups, symmetric groups and linear groups over finite fields. An important tool is the Riemann Roch formula which provides a relation between the characteristic classes of an induced representation, the classes of the underlying representation and those of the permutation representation of the infinite symmetric group. Dr Thomas also discusses the implications of his work for some arithmetic groups which will interest algebraic number theorists. Dr Thomas assumes the reader has taken basic courses in algebraic topology, group theory and homological algebra, but has included an appendix in which he gives a purely topological proof of the Riemann Roch formula

Representations of finite and Lie groups by
C. B Thomas(
Book
)
19 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and German and held by 206 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book provides an introduction to representations of both finite and compact groups. The proofs of the basic results are given for the finite case, but are so phrased as to hold without change for compact topological groups with an invariant integral replacing the sum over the group elements as an averaging tool. Among the topics covered are the relation between representations and characters, the construction of irreducible representations, induced representations and Frobenius reciprocity."BOOK JACKET

Elliptic cohomology by
C. B Thomas(
Book
)
25 editions published between 1999 and 2007 in English and held by 202 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Elliptic Cohomology is one of few books to present a systematic exposition of the geometric and arithmetic aspects of this extremely beautiful theory: a quotientoriented cobordism localized away from the prime 2, whose coefficients coincide with a ring of modular forms. Charles B. Thomas constructs this cohomology theory and evaluates it on classifying spaces BG of finite groups G. Elliptic Cohomology is an important resource for mathematicians interested in topology, number theory, geometry, and theoretical and mathematical physics

Partial differential equations by
Joseph Wloka(
Book
)
5 editions published between 1987 and 1992 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is a rigorous introduction to the abstract theory of partial differential equations. The main prerequisite is familiarity with basic functional analysis: more advanced topics such as Fredholm operators, the Schauder fixed point theorem and Bochner integrals are introduced when needed, and the book begins by introducing the necessary material from the theory of distributions and Sobolev spaces. Using such techniques, the author presents different methods available for solving elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic equations. He also considers the difference process for the practical solution of a partial differential equation, emphasising that it is possible to solve them numerically by simple methods. Many examples and exercises are provided throughout, and care is taken to explain difficult points. Advanced undergraduates and graduate students will appreciate this selfcontained and practical introduction
