The new psychology by E. W Scripture( Book )
37 editions published between 1892 and 2011 in English and held by 314 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"During the last few years a wide interest has been aroused in the growth of a science of mental life which employs methods hitherto peculiar to the physical sciences. The interest has been followed by misconceptions of the most varied character. Some have supposed the new science to concern itself with experiments on thought-transference and clairvoyance; others have regarded it as a presumptuous sub-department of the physiology of the senses and the brain; and still others have treated it as merely a materialistic philosophy in one of its aberrations. Amid such confusion it is no wonder that people ask: "What is the new psychology? Is it brain-physiology, or spiritualism, or a new kind of metaphysics?" And the chemist, geologist, or physicist is also inclined to ask: "Is it a science at all?" My aim in this book is to show just what the new psychology is. I have sought to make clear the fundamental ideas of the science, and have not attempted to cover the whole field of investigation. Salient points and fundamental methods were chosen rather than a multitude of details"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)
Researches in experimental phonetics. The study of speech curves by E. W Scripture( Book )
25 editions published between 1906 and 2012 in English and held by 282 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"These investigations had their origin in an attempt to use the methods of natural science in studying the nature of verse. The only true verse is that which flows from the mouth of the poet and which reaches the ears of the public; printed verse is only a makeshift for the verbal communication. It is evident that the only way to undertake a scientific study of verse is to get it directly as it is spoken and then to use the methods of analysis and measurement. Using the methods and fundamental principles explained in this volume, I have traced and studied a number of records of American speech; the results are nearly ready for publication. A large amount of material on rhythm and verse has also been collected and partly prepared for publication; the investigations thus return to the problems with which they began"--Preface. "A fellow psychologist said to me one day, "Are you not afraid that all this accurate and fine work in the laboratory public?" This book is the answer. You, my dear reader, and I, have no time, inclination, or means to spend years in studying the details of the physical laboratory or the observatory, yet we both enjoy an account of the latest advances of electricity by a specialist in physics or a series of new photographs of the moon by an astronomer. Life is so short that a man can learn only one thing well, whether it be the best method of dyeing cambric or the most efficient construction of locomotives. The botanist is quite at home with the plants but is ordinarily as ignorant of psychology as a stock-broker--if not more so. The mathematician learns some section of mathematics, but would be just as awkward at a chemical analysis as any other outsider. We all belong to the great public except in regard to the particular handiwork, trade, or science that each knows something about. And yet we are all interested in hearing about a new science. There is nothing too good for the public--for you and for me; the fine the work, the more novel the invention of the more important the discovery, the greater the duty of telling it to the public in language that can be understood. This is the first book on the new, or experimental, psychology written in the English language. That it has been written expressly for the people will, I hope, be taken as evidence of the attitude of the science in its desire to serve humanity. In one respect I have departed widely from the usual writers on psychology; I have written plain, every-day English and have not tried to clothe my ignorance in the "multitudinous syllabifications and frangomaxillary combinations" that pass as philosophic English"--Preface.
