The Writers at Work collection consists of six lectures by noted American, and particularly southwestern, novelists. The lectures were presented in 1978-1979 before audiences from the University of New Mexico Departments of English and Continuing Education as part of a class titled "Writers at Work." Each presentation is introduced by New Mexico author Stanley Crawford. Master recordings are on 3/4" video tapes, with each lecture on one tape except for Richard Bradford's, which is on two tapes. Access copies of the recordings are cataloged in the CSWR general collection

Joseph and Diana Stein were also active in the Historical Society of New Mexico, in downtown Las Vegas restoration projects, the United World College, and New Mexico history topics, and in supporting local history writers. The collection includes material and correspondence with many authors such as Fred Nolan, Richard Bradford, S. Omar Barker, Marc Simmons, Ann Nolan Clark, Lawrence Clark Powell and materials from illustrator Herman Ilfeld Bacharach. The Steins also collected New Mexico cookery material. A postcard collection, photos, and a small Jewish Library collection are also included. The collection retains much of the order in which it was received by the institution
