Accompagne l'exposition au Musée du Louvre du 10 mars au 6 juin 2011. Pietro da Cortona (1597-1669) compose avec Bernini et Borromini la triade des grands maîtres du baroque romain. Au service de trois papes successifs, Urbain VIII, Innocent X et Alexandre VII, il a profondément transformé l'art de peindre dans la Ville éternelle, enrichissant la leçon d'Annibale Carracci par ses recherches sur l'illusionnisme, l'unification de l'espace figuré et la lumière vénitienne. Artiste aux dons variés, il est également un architecte original, qui a rompu avec la planéité des façades d'église. Louis XIV l'a sollicité pour le palais du Louvre. Son talent et ses commandes prestigieuses ont attiré vers lui de nombreux élèves et disciples, dont Ciro Ferri (1634-1685), le plus fidèle et l'un des plus doués. Formé dans la tradition du dessin florentin, Cortona a élaboré un style par essence romain, celui de l'Église triomphante qui se plaît à glorifier la Création.
