Out of gas : the end of the age of oil by David L Goodstein( Book )

23 editions published between 2004 and 2008 in 3 languages and held by 2,131 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this book, David Goodstein, professor of physics at Caltech, explains the underlying scientific principles of the inevitable fossil fuel crisis we face, and the closely related peril to the Earth's climate. The discovery of any natural resource, oil included, rises rapidly at first, but the rate of discovery eventually reaches a peak that will never be exceeded, and declines forever after that. In the 1950s, when America's military and industrial might arose largely from the fact that it was the world's leading producer of oil, a geophysicists named M. King Hubbert, realizing that the discovery peak had already passed, predicted that oil production in the Lower 48 would reach its highest point around 1970 and would decrease rapidly after that. To the surprise of nearly everyone, he turned out to be right. Now a number of petroleum geologists have pointed out that worldwide discovery of oil peaked decades ago
Feynman's lost lecture : the motion of planets around the sun by David L Goodstein( Book )

42 editions published between 1996 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 1,380 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The subject of Feynman's lecture was the watershed discovery that separated the ancient world from the modern world - the culmination of the Scientific Revolution. Before Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton, the universe was Earth-centered. After their discoveries, our idea of the universe steadily altered and expanded, moving outward to the infinity we try to understand in our own time. Thus Feynman deals here with a crowning achievement of the human mind, comparable to Beethoven's symphonies. Shakespeare's plays, or Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. Feynman conclusively demonstrates the astonishing fact that has mystified and intrigued all deep thinkers since Newton's time: Nature obeys mathematics
A crude awakening the oil crash by Basil Gelpke( Visual )

5 editions published between 2006 and 2008 in English and held by 1,177 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A documentary film that "debunk[s] the conventional wisdom that oil production will continue to climb, and instead stare[s] bleakly at a planet facing economic meltdown and conflict over its most valuable resource"--Container
States of matter by David L Goodstein( Book )

30 editions published between 1975 and 2014 in English and held by 652 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This unique overview by a prominent CalTech physicist provides a modern, rigorous, and integrated treatment of the key physical principles and techniques related to gases, liquids, solids, and their phase transitions. No other single volume offers such comprehensive coverage of the subject, and the treatment consistently emphasizes areas in which research results are likely to be applicable to other disciples. Starting with a chapter on thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, the text proceeds to in-depth discussions of perfect gases, electrons in metals, Bose condensation, fluid structure, potential energy, Weiss molecular field theory, van der Waals equation, and other pertinent aspects of phase transitions. Many helpful illustrative problems appear at the end of each chapter, and annotated bibliographies offer further guidance
On fact and fraud : cautionary tales from the front lines of science by David L Goodstein( Book )

12 editions published between 2010 and 2012 in English and Italian and held by 649 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Fraud in science is not as easy to identify as one might think. When accusations of scientific misconduct occur, truth can often be elusive, & the cause of a scientist's ethical misstep isn't always clear. This book looks at actual cases in which fraud was committed or alleged, explaining what constitutes scientific misconduct & what doesn't

Beyond the stars : our origins and the search for life in the universe by Paolo Saraceno( Book )

8 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 182 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What is the origin of the universe? Are we alone in the Universe? Using clear and plain language, the author explores these two interesting scientific-philosophical themes with a broad range of studies, including astronomy, cosmology, chemistry, biology
Climate change and the energy problem : physical science and economics perspective by David L Goodstein( Book )

6 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 158 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This important compendium deals with the primary world problems of global warming and the coming energy crisis. In alternating chapters, it lays out the nature of the two interrelated problems, and specifies the various economic considerations
Adventures in cosmology by David L Goodstein( Book )

14 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 139 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume tells of the quest for cosmology as seen by some of the finest cosmologists in the world. It starts with "Galaxy Formation from Start to Finish" and ends with "The First Supermassive Black Holes in the Universe," exploring in between the grand themes of galaxies, the early universe, expansion of the universe, dark matter and dark energy. This up-to-date collection of review articles offers a general introduction to cosmology and is intended for all probing into the profound questions on where we came from and where we are going
