Geometric mechanics, and symmetry : from finite to infinite dimensions by Darryl D Holm( Book )

58 editions published between 2008 and 2011 in English and German and held by 423 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

After a summary of the necessary elements of calculus on smooth manifolds and basic Lie group threory, the main body of the text considers how symmetry reduction of Hamilton's principle allows one to derive and analyse the Euler-Poincaré equations
Nonlinear systems of partial differential equations in applied mathematics by SIAM-AMS Summer Seminar on Systems of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations in Applied Mathematics( Book )

18 editions published between 1985 and 1986 in English and Undetermined and held by 317 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Crossover-time in quantum boson and spin systems by Gennady P Berman( Book )

11 editions published between 1994 and 2013 in English and held by 247 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The authors compare classical and quantum dynamics in the quasiclassical region of parameters and under the condition of unstable (chaotic) classical behavior. They estimate the characteristic time-scale at which classical and quantum solutions start to differ significantly. The method is based on exact equations for time-dependent expectation values in boson and spin coherent states, and applies to rather general Hamiltonians with many degrees of freedom. The authors develop a consistent dynamical theory for quantum nonintegrable Hamiltonians and provide explicit examples of classical-quantum "crossover-time", a very common and fundamental phenomenon in quantum nonintegrable systems. This book can be recommended to graduate students and to specialists

Geometric mechanics by Darryl D Holm( Book )

22 editions published between 2008 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This textbook introduces the tools and language of modern geometric mechanics to advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in mathematics, physics, and engineering. It treats the dynamics of rotating, spinning and rolling rigid bodies from a geometric viewpoint, by formulating their solutions as coadjoint motions generated by Lie groups. The only prerequisites are linear algebra, multivariable calculus and some familiarity with Euler-Lagrange variational principles and canonical Poisson brackets in classical mechanics at the beginning undergraduate level. Variational calculus on tangent spaces of Lie groups is explained in the context of familiar concrete examples. Through these examples, the student develops skills in performing computational manipulations, starting from vectors and matrices, working through the theory of quaternions to understand rotations, and then transferring these skills to the computation of more abstract adjoint and coadjoint motions, Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian formulations, momentum maps and finally dynamics with nonholonomic constraints. The 120 Exercises and 55 Worked Answers help the student to grasp the essential aspects of the subject, and to develop proficiency in using the powerful methods of geometric mechanics. In addition, all theorems are stated and proved explicitly. The book's many examples and worked exercises make it ideal for both classroom use and self-study
Nonlinear evolution equations and dynamical systems : proceedings of the 6th international workshop, 16-26 July 1990, Dubna, USSR by V. G Makhanʹkov( Book )

1 edition published in 1995 in English and held by 48 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Dynamical Systems (NEEDS) provides a presentation of the state of the art. But for some exceptions, the contributions are intentionally brief to give only the gist of the methods, proofs, etc. including references to the relevant literature. This gives a handy overview of current research activities. Hence, the book should be equally useful to the senior researcher as well as the colleague just entering the field. Topics treated: One- and multidimensional (integrable) models, geometric and algebraic methods, quantum field theory, applications to nonlinear optics, condensed matter physics, oceanography, and many others. Further keywords: Hirota bilinearity, Hamiltonians, Toda lattice, multi-dimensional inverse scattering, bifurcations, dromions, polynomial solutions, Ermakov systems, computer algebra, symplectic operators, (quantum) superalgebras, groups, Ising model
Nonlinear phenomena in ocean dynamics : special issue originating from the 15th Annual International Conference of the Center for Nonlinear Studies, Los Alamos, NM, USA, 15-19 May 1995 by Center for Nonlinear Studies (Los Alamos National Laboratory)( Book )

11 editions published in 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Geometry, mechanics, and dynamics : the legacy of Jerry Marsden by Dong Eui Chang( Book )

6 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book illustrates the broad range of Jerry Marsden's mathematical legacy in areas of geometry, mechanics, and dynamics, from very pure mathematics to very applied, but always with a geometric perspective. Each contribution develops its material from the viewpoint of geometric mechanics beginning at the very foundations, introducing readers to modern issues via illustrations in a wide range of topics. The twenty refereed papers contained in this volume are based on lectures and research performed during the month of July 2012 at the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, in a program in honor of Marsden's legacy. The unified treatment of the wide breadth of topics treated in this book will be of interest to both experts and novices in geometric mechanics. Experts will recognize applications of their own familiar concepts and methods in a wide variety of fields, some of which they may never have approached from a geometric viewpoint. Novices may choose topics that interest them among the various fields and learn about geometric approaches and perspectives toward those topics that will be new for them as well
