The practice of U.S. women's history narratives, intersections, and dialogues by Jay S Kleinberg( )
7 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 1,680 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In the last several decades, U.S. womens history has come of age. Not only have historians challenged the national narrative on the basis of their rich explorations of the personal, the social, the economic, and the political, but they have also entered into dialogues with each other over the meaning of womens history itself. In this collection of seventeen original essays on womens lives from the colonial period to the present, contributors take the competing forces of race, gender, class, sexuality, religion, and region into account. Among many other examples, they examine how conceptions

"The art that is life" : the arts & crafts movement in America, 1875-1920 by Wendy Kaplan( Book )
15 editions published between 1987 and 1998 in English and held by 904 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This paperback edition is a reissue of the classic book on the American Arts and Crafts movement, one of the most significant and far-reaching movements in American art. It is also one of the least understood. It transformed not only how objects looked but how people looked at objects. It changed American attitudes toward design and the home, and compelled people to think about the relationship of art to everyday life. The results can be seen in such diverse styles as Gothic, Oriental, Aesthetic, Colonial Revival, Native American, Mission, and Art Nouveau." ""The Art that is Life" was initially published in conjunction with a 1987 exhibition originated by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the first to synthesize the decorative arts and architecture of this period in America. Works include such objects as furniture, glass, silver, ceramics, textiles, wallpaper, books, and architectural drawings. With eight essays by distinguished scholars and more than 300 illustrations, this book serves not only as a classic reference on American design reform but also as a celebration of the era that so unified the "artful" with the "useful.""--Jacket

Voices of women historians : the personal, the political, the professional ( Book )
7 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 555 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Coordinating Council for Women in History evolved from a cohort of women historians who turned their scholarly focus to the recovery of women's experiences. In so doing, they created and legitimated the field of women's history. The contributors to this volume, former CCWH officers, mark the 30th anniversary of the organization while commemorating three decades of feminist activism and scholarship. Recording the diverse paths women have taken to become historians, the essays contained in this book describe how a particular group of women negotiated the often competing demands of being a woman, a professional, and a political activist from the turbulent 1960s through the challenges of the 1990s. But beyond the celebration of personal and professional progress, this collection contributes to the emerging historiography of women's history and the literature on women in the professions. - Publisher
