Slavery, disease, and suffering in the southern Lowcountry by Peter McCandless( )

14 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in English and held by 614 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1776, the Carolina lowcountry was the wealthiest and unhealthiest region in British North America. This book argues that the two were intimately connected, examining how people created, combated, avoided, and denied the virulent disease environment; and how disease and human responses to it influenced the region, the South, and the United States"--
Of civil wrongs and rights : the Fred Korematsu story by Eric Paul Fournier( Visual )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 320 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1942, Fred Korematsu was an average 23-year-old California native working as a shipyard welder. But when he refused to obey Executive Order 9066, which sent 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry into internment camps, he became something extraordinary -- a civil rights champion. This film follows Korematsu's story from the moment he first resisted confinement to the hard-won victory he finally achieved 39 years later, with the help of a new generation of Japanese-American activists seeking vindication and the assurance that such a terrible injustice would never occur again. This is the striking story of an ordinary man's courageous actions, which demonstrates the power of ordinary citizens to rise up against injustice

The bridge by Eric Steel( Visual )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"In 2004, 24 people jumped to their deaths from the Golden Gate Bridge. More people have chosen to end their lives at the Golden Gate Bridge than anywhere else in the world."--End titles. What makes the suicides at the bridge so unusual is that they take place in broad daylight, in front of people in a busy place - unlike most suicides, which are enacted in extreme privacy. Filmmaker Eric Steel and his crew spent 2004 filming the bridge during daylight hours from two locations, grappling with the ethical question of when to alert authorities, and their responsibilities as observers. The film features interviews with the families and friends of some of the victims that year, as well as one person who changed his mind. Offering a glimpse into one of the darkest, most impenetrable corners of the human mind, the film also interrogates society's ability to blithely ignore the grim realities of depression, mental illness, and drug abuse that underly so many suicides. These are only some of the factors discussed by the film, common to the twenty four people who died at the Golden Gate Bridge in 2004, who are now linked together forever by a 4 second fall in an otherwise magically, mysteriously beautiful place
