Its 220 plates were produced by English naturalist Mark Catesby, who settled in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1722 and spent the next four years traveling up and down the North American coast and to various islands in the Caribbean. After returning to England in 1726, Catesby spent 17 years engraving his work's various illustrations.
