Study on creep deformation mechanism of 316LN stainless steel from impression creep tests( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract : Impression creep tests were carried out on 316LN stainless steel (SS) at various temperatures in the range 898–973 K. The stress dependence of the steady state impression velocity followed the power-law with stress exponent n  = 6. The temperature dependence of the steady state impression velocity obeyed Arrhenius type rate equation. The apparent activation energy for creep deformation ( Q c ) was estimated to be 500 kJ mol −1 . Based on the n and Q c values, it is concluded that the rate controlling mechanism is dislocation creep

Styrene butadiene rubber as a viscosity improver: Experimental investigations and quantum chemical studies( )

in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The limited viscosity range of vegetable oils restricts their effectiveness as a lubricant in numerous applications. In this work, the viscosity improvement with styrene butadiene rubber as an additive in sesame oil is studied and the results are compared with those of the commonly used viscosity improver, ethyl vinyl acetate, using a rheometer. Sesame oil/styrene butadiene rubber blends show higher increment in viscosity than sesame oil/ethyl vinyl acetate blends. The viscosity variations are further validated using Arrhenius model. A computational quantum chemical software, Gaussian 09, is used to evaluate the binding energies between molecules. Ground state electronic structures of molecules are modeled with density functional theory. Thermal properties such as flash, fire, and pour points have also been evaluated for sesame oil/styrene butadiene rubber blends. Chemical oxygen demand and biological oxygen demand are the parameters chosen to evaluate the biodegradability of sesame oil/styrene butadiene rubber blend

Effect of nitrogen content on dynamic strain ageing behaviour of type 316LN austenitic stainless steel during tensile deformation( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract : The effect of nitrogen content on the dynamic strain ageing (DSA) behaviour of type 316LN austenitic stainless steel has been studied. The nitrogen content was varied from 0·07 to 0·22 wt-%. The tensile tests were carried out over a temperature range of 300–1123 K and at three strain rates in the range 3×10 −3 –3×10 −5 s −1 . Serration was observed in the load elongation curves in the intermediate test temperature range and has been considered due to DSA phenomenon. The critical strain to onset of serrated flow increased with increase in nitrogen content and strain rate. The temperature for onset of DSA and the temperature of disappearance of DSA were found to increase with the increase in nitrogen content. The variations in tensile strength and work hardening rate of the steel with temperature exhibit peak values in the intermediate temperature range and have been attributed due to DSA phenomenon. The activation energy for DSA, estimated based on the temperature and strain rate dependences of the strain to onset of serrated flow, was found to increase from 111 to 218 kJ mol −1 with the increase in nitrogen content from 0·07 to 0·22 wt-% and the increase has been attributed to the possible enhanced interaction of the DSA causing interstitial nitrogen with substitutional chromium

Advanced materials for structural components of Indian sodium-cooled fast reactors( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract: The performance of fast reactor (FR) working under high temperature, moderate pressure and intense neutron irradiation depends on its structural materials. Type 316 LN austenitic stainless steel with 0.02–0.03wt.% carbon and 0.06–0.08wt.% nitrogen is generally used for structural components of FR along with modified 9Cr–1Mo ferritic steel for steam generator. With an aim of enhancing the life of FR, efforts towards the enhancement of strength of the materials are been described. Nitrogen content in the 316 LN steel has been increased for optimizing the tensile, creep, fatigue and creep–fatigue interaction strengths. Both the tensile and creep strength were found to increase with nitrogen content; whereas the fatigue and creep–fatigue interaction strength have optimum values at around 0.12wt.% of nitrogen. Based on the study, nitrogen content in 316 LN steel has been optimized at 0.11–0.13wt.% for optimum combination of strengths. Weldability study has been performed and matching welding consumable has been developed. Creep strength enhancement of modified 9Cr–1Mo steel and its fusion welded joint has been addressed through microalloying the steel with boron along with the restriction on nitrogen content. The microalloying not only improves the creep strength of the steel also reduces the type IV cracking susceptibility of the fusion welded joint of the steel. The optimum contents of boron and nitrogen in the steel have been identified as around 60ppm boron and 100ppm nitrogen for better creep strength and type IV cracking resistance. The paper describes the challenges in developing the materials
