A man, who as a boy had his legs needlessly amputated, swears revenge on the surgeon. He has become the master of the San Francisco underworld and contrives to take the surgeon's daughter as hostage in order to force him to graft on new legs - the legs of her fiancee. Chaney's performance as the legless anti-hero lends weight to the melodramatic plot. His legendary ability to subject himself to physical discomfort in order to project a tortured mental state dominates the film

Louis Bennison, a favorite star of the Betzwood Studio, plays a cowboy born in to an aristocratic British family that long ago disowned his father and mother. Sam and his adopted son Jim live the bachelor life out on the plains until they hear news of inheriting a fortune and a title in England. Returning there with some reluctance to assume his position with Jim, they are soon caught up in a plot with another relative that would put Sam out of the picture so that he can inherit all. We are treated to many comic moments in which the director and writer contrast the American and British social class divisions, and other cultural differences. With the help of a lovely lady of the estate, Sam is able to thwart a plot to poison him. Unfortunately, this is where the film abruptly ends, as the original print is not complete, the ending having been lost or damaged
