The only film to co-star Edward G. Robinson and James Cagney. Robinson has the larger part as a small-town barber who fancies himself a big-time gambler. He travels to the Big City in the company of his younger brother Cagney, who wants to make sure that Robinson isn't fleeced by the high-rollers. Unfortunately Robinson has a weakness for beautiful blondes, most of whom take him for all his money or betray him in some other manner. The cops aren't keen on Robinson's gambling activities, but they can pin nothing on him until he accidentally kills Cagney in a fight. The incident results in a jail term for manslaughter, and a more sober-sided outlook on life for the formerly flamboyant Robinson

A brisk, well-played matchup of whodunit and national pastime, Death on the Diamond boasts a roster of all-stars who hit this improbable plot out of the park with humor and conviction. After batboy Mickey Rooney finds acid-laced gloves at spring training, suspects and targets mount all season long, compelling pitcher Robert Young - himself a suspect despite dodging two assassination attempts - to bring his A-game to catching the murderer. Is it a financier poised to snatch the franchise from its indebted owner, a gambling cartel angling to improve its odds, ex-players ejected in a betting scandal, Young's rival for club secretary, Madge Evans - or someone else? With on-deck supporting pros Nat Pendleton, Ted Healy, Paul Kelly, Edward Brophy and blink-of-the-eye hotdog vendor Walter Brennan, Death on the Diamond swings for the fences and scores." --Container
