John Colter's solo journey in the fall of 1807 took him deep into Crow Country, to a land where water gushed straight up out of the ground. He gave such an account of its gloomy terrors, its hidden fires, smoking pits, and the all the prevading smell of brimstone that it received the name of "Colter's Hell."
