Five hundred mathematical challenges by
Edward Barbeau(
Book
)
15 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in English and held by 731 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book contains 500 problems that range over a wide spectrum of areas of high school mathematics and levels of difficulty. Some are simple mathematical puzzlers while others are serious problems at the Olympiad level. Students of all levels of interest and ability will be entertained and taught by the book. For many problems, more than one solution is supplied so that students can see how different approaches can be taken to a problem and compare the elegance and efficiency of different tools that might be applied. Teachers at both the college and secondary levels will find the book useful, both for encouraging their students and for their own pleasure. Some of the problems can be used to provide a little spice in the regular curriculum by demonstrating the power of very basic techniques. These problems were first published as a series of problem booklets almost twenty years ago, at a time when there were a few resources of this type available for the English reader. They have stood the test of time and the demand for them has been steady. Their publication in book form is long overdue. This collection provides a solid base for students who wish to enter competitions at the Olympiad level. They can begin with easy problems and progress to more demanding ones. A special mathematical toolchest summarizes the results and techniques needed by competitionlevel students. from back cover

Mathematical modelling : classroom notes in applied mathematics(
Book
)
34 editions published between 1987 and 1995 in English and Undetermined and held by 665 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Designed for classroom use, this book contains short, selfcontained mathematical models of problems in the physical, mathematical, and biological sciences first published in the Classroom Notes section of the SIAM Review from 19751985. The problems provide an ideal way to make complex subject matter more accessible to the student through the use of concrete applications. Each section has extensive supplementary references provided by the editor from his years of experience with mathematical modelling

Problems in applied mathematics : selections from SIAM review(
Book
)
18 editions published between 1967 and 1990 in English and held by 344 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
People in all walks of lifeand perhaps mathematicians especiallydelight in working on problems for the sheer pleasure of meeting a challenge. The problem section of SIAM Review has always provided such a challenge for mathematicians. The section was started to offer classroom instructors and their students as well as other interested problemists, a set of problemssolved or unsolved illustrating various applications of mathematics. In many cases the unsolved problems were eventually solved. Problems in Applied Mathematics is a compilation of 380 of SIAM Review's most interesting problems dating back to the journal's inception in 1959. The problems are classified into 22 broad categories including Series, Special Functions, Integrals, Polynomials, Probability, Combinatorics, Matrices and Determinants, Optimization, Inequalities, Ordinary Differential Equations, Boundary Value Problems, Asymptotics and Approximations, Mechanics, Graph Theory, and Geometry

Problems from Murray Klamkin : the Canadian collection by
A. C. F Liu(
Book
)
4 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 130 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Murray Klamkin was a dedicated problem solver and problem proposer, who left indelible marks on the problemist community. After working in industry and academe in the United States, he spent the last thirty of his eighty four years in Canada. He was famous for his Quickies, problems that have quick and neat solutions. In this book you will find all of the problems that he proposed for Crux Mathematicorum, including all of his Quickies. His problems covered a very wide range of topics, and show a great deal of insight into what is possible in these areas. The problems are arranged into sets according to topic,and the lightly edited solutions are as published in Crux Mathematicorum."Publisher's description
