Content-based second language instruction by Donna Brinton( Book )

31 editions published between 1989 and 2010 in 3 languages and held by 606 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This text can serve as a resource guide to those involved in developing and implementing content-based courses - i.e., teachers, teacher trainers, curriculum/materials developers, and program administrators. Valuable guidelines for selecting and designing content-based courses, placing and evaluating students, and developing appropriate materials around the subject matter content are presented. Content-Based Second Language Instruction is also a course text for teacher training, program planning, and curriculum design. Although its focus is on second language learners at the postsecondary levels, the book will also be of interest to teachers at the elementary and secondary levels, as well as those planning courses in a foreign language setting."--Jacket

The Ontario test of English as a second language (OTESL) : a report on the research by Ontario( Book )

7 editions published between 1983 and 1987 in English and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Ontario Test of English as a Second Language (otesl) is a battery of instruments and procedures for evaluating the English proficiency of second language speakers in postsecondary institutions in Ontario (Canada). A Post-Admission test measures performance in reading, listening, and writing. An Oral Interaction Test is based on tasks of increasing difficulty, from social interaction to academic language. Alternative versions have been supplied for science and non-science students. A Placement test has been developed for pre-admission needs. The battery was tested with secondary, college, and English-as-a-second-language students. Reliability and validity were adequate, and on the whole, test items discriminated between better and poorer students. Further data collection and revision of test instruments are needed. Statistical analyses of data are reported in Appendix e, Tables 1 to 10. Other appendices include test specifications and assessment scales. (Sld)

Post-secondary follow-up of former French immersion students in the Ottawa area : a pilot study by Marjorie Bingham Wesche( Book )

4 editions published between 1986 and 1994 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The report summarizes findings of a pilot study of 1985 graduates of bilingual high school programs at the University of Ottawa and Carleton, Queen's, and McGill Universities. Data on French language proficiency, attitudes toward the French language, and current patterns of French use at the universities are compared for early and late immersion students and for two of the universities' samples. A major objective of the study was to develop and refine a methodology and battery of instruments for postsecondary followup studies of immersion graduates for use throughout Canada. Procedures and instruments for tracing and locating subjects, measurement and self-evaluation of French proficiency, and archival data-gathering in the postsecondary institutions are described. A secondary objective was to describe postsecondary institutional response to the growing clientele of bilingual anglophone students, including French language course offerings, opportunities to use French, and institutional support and recognition of French language activity. The report includes a proposal for continuation of the followup of the pilot group and a later cohort. (Author/MSE)

1 edition published in 1996 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The report reviews current research findings related to the three entry points (early, middle, late) for French immersion programs in Ottawa (Ontario) elementary and secondary schools. It consists of: an executive summary and brief overview; an annotated bibliography covering authoritative immersion research reviews and reports published since 1987; a list of 82 references either cited or consulted for the report; and appended data tables showing French enrollment trends for the Carleton (1978-94) and Ottawa (1970-96) Boards of Education. The annotated bibliography is divided into five sections: (1) research overviews comparing three French immersion programs (9 citations); (2) empirical studies comparing three French immersion programs (24 citations); (3) empirical studies of alternative intensive French second language programs (3 citations); (4) other documents, including provisional policy statements and internal school board reports (6 citations); and (5) recent bibliographies of immersion and bilingual education research (5 citations). Learning Behaviors of Successful Adult Students on Intensive Language Training by Marjorie Bingham Wesche( Book )

1 edition published in 1977 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The study described here sought to identify and define "learning behaviors" characteristic of those adult students who were highly successful in acquiring listening and speaking fluency in French in an intensive language training program. Data were collected from behavioral observation of students in the classroom, in-depth interviews with them, pre-training questionnaires and objective predictive measures. The learning behaviors are described including their frequency of occurrence during selected classroom activities and the relationship of these behaviors to achievement in listening and speaking skills. The statistical analyses are supplemented by group findings from interviews with the eleven highest and seven lowest achievers. Findings are interpreted in terms of an information processing model. The results suggest that the most successful learners are those who use their exposure time in the l2 actively and who seek to extend this outside the classroom. With regard to the appropriateness of an information-processing model for language learning, one conclusion is that satisfactory explanation of the language acquisition process remains beyond the reach of present theory or research.
