City Lights: The little tramp meets a beautiful blind girl selling flowers on the sidewalk who mistakes him for a wealthy duke. When he learns that an operation may restore her sight, he sets off to earn the money she needs to have the operation. In a series of comedy adventures that only Chaplin could pull off, he eventually succeeds, even though his efforts land him in jail. While he is there, the girl has the operation and afterwards yearns to meet her benefactor. The closing scene in which she discovers that he is not a wealthy duke but only the little tramp was described by critic James Agee as "the highest moment in movies" and brought audiences to tears

Un povero vagabondo dall'animo sensibile e pieno di generose aspirazioni incontra un giorno una povera ragazza cieca, che vende fiori, e se ne innamora. Essa lo crede un ricco signore. Il vagabondo non può dimenticare la gentile immagine: errando una notte per la città, giunge alla sponda del fiume, dove un ricco signore disperato è sul punto di togliersi la vita. Il vagabondo lo distoglie dall'insano proposito e lo rincuora: i due diventano ottimi amici. Ma il milionario è tanto preso dai suoi affari e dai suoi piaceri che non ha tempo di pensare all'amico e un bel giorno parte per l'Europa. L'affetto, che lega il vagabondo alla cieca, si fa invece sempre piu' intenso. Un giorno la ragazza s'ammala e il vagabondo si piega a tutti i mestieri per poterle procurare il necessario. Finalmente ritorna il milionario che offre ospitalità al vagabondo e provvede alla cieca i mezzi necessari perché si faccia operare. Alcuni parenti del milionario accusano di furto il vagabondo, che, benché innocente, deve passare dei mesi in carcere. Nel frattempo la ragazza, che ha riacquistato la vista, ha aperto un bel negozio di fiori. Un giorno il vagabondo, uscito di carcere, si ferma dinanzi alla vetrina della fioraia. Questa gli va incontro e a un tratto riconosce in lui l'ignoto benefattore

Una de las peliculas mas alegres y despreocupadas de Chaplin. El hombre contra la maquina¡ y el ganador es cualquier fan de la comedia cuando Charlot, el vagabundo de Chaplin, se enfrenta a sus enemigos en la linea de ensamble en este clasico seleccionado en 1998 por el Instituto Americano de Cinematografia como una de las 100 mejores peliculas de Estados Unidos. Charlot entra en accion y hace de las suyas dentro de una fabrica en donde, artefactos como una maquina alimentadora de empleados podia hacer que la hora de comida durara tan solo 15 minutos. Cuando es despedido, se une a una muchacha desamparada (Paulette Goddard) para encontrar la felicidad y una paga, encontrando solo problemas al trabajar como velador en patines, como cantante al que no se le entiende nada, o como preso, entre otros. Al final se van hombro con hombro en busca de un futuro incierto; sabemos que no encontraron la felicidad ni una paga, sin embargo, se encontraron el uno al otro. Los tiempos y la satira permanecen por siempre en Tiempos Modernos
