Liberals in schism a history of the National Liberal Party by David Dutton( )
11 editions published between 2008 and 2012 in English and held by 1,370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Formed out of a breakaway from the mainstream Liberal party in 1931, the Liberal National party (renamed the 'National Liberal Party' in 1948) preserved a separate identity for almost 40 years. During this time they helped ensure that the Liberals themselves would not return to their former status of a governing party while helping to broaden the electoral appeal of their Conservative allies, contributing significantly to the Tory domination of the British political scene in the middle of the twentieth century. Here, David Dutton shows us for the first time how the National Liberals were a pot

Anthony Eden : a life and reputation by David Dutton( Book )
11 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in English and held by 593 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Drawing on a mass of unpublished archival material, much of it from Anthony Eden's own papers, David Dutton seeks to reassess the career of a man who experienced the extremes of political fortune. For much of his life the golden boy of British politics with a popular appeal that transcended party boundaries, Eden left public life with his reputation for sound judgement and probity sadly tarnished. The Suez crisis of 1956, which did such lasting damage to Eden's historical reputation, is closely examined but is not allowed to compromise a proper assessment of a man who was at the heart of British political life for more than two decades. Eden's role in some of the key episodes in modern history is searchingly probed: his participation in the appeasement of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy until 1938, when he resigned from Chamberlain's government; his direction in conjunction with Churchill of Britain's wartime diplomacy; his involvement as a key player in the Cold War, in European integration and in postwar domestic policy; and his instigation of the events that culminated in the Suez debacle and his own downfall. Anthony Eden was not an easy man to know, but David Dutton's interpretation of his career transcends the partisanship of writings by his contemporaries or near-contemporaries. He emerges neither as the 'golden boy' of myth nor as a man largely bereft of substance but as a diplomat of high standing, if a dangerously thin-skinned and sometimes inept politician
British politics since 1945 : the rise and fall of consensus by David Dutton( Book )
17 editions published between 1991 and 1997 in English and held by 557 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This work offers a concise survey of British politics in the postwar era. In an expanded new edition, the author extends his exploration of the debate over "consensus" up to the present day. "Consensus politics" is the notion that for approximately a quarter of a century after 1945 there existed a broad measure of agreement between the major political parties about the role and objectives of government and the fundamental bases of policy, domestic and foreign
Paris 1918 the war diary of the British ambassador, the 17th Earl of Derby by Edward George Villiers Stanley Derby( )
10 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 408 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The diary of the 17th Earl of Derby, once thought to have been lost, provides a detailed and important account of the last months of the First World War as seen through the eyes of the British Ambassador in Paris. Derby was in many ways an unlikely choice as ambassador. He was not a diplomat and could not, on his arrival, speak French. His appointment owed much to Lloyd Georges determination to remove him from his previous post as Secretary of State for War. But, after a somewhat uncertain start, he proved to be a very successful ambassador upon whom successive Foreign Secretaries, Arthur Bal

A history of the Liberal Party in the twentieth century by David Dutton( Book )
10 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 256 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Most existing accounts of the British Liberal Party are written within the context of the party's decline. The passage of the Twentieth century, however, enables a fresh view to be taken, which recognizes that the party has now been strengthening its position for more than forty years and has once again become a major player in British politics. This survey of British Liberalism from the era of Campbell-Bannerman to that of Charles Kennedy reviews existing literature while offering its own distinctive perspective
