CICEREO (Marcus Tullius, 3rd Jan. 106-7th Dec. 43 B.C.), Roman lawyer, orator and politician (and even philosopher), of whom we know more than of any other Roman, lived through the stirring era which saw the rise, dictatorship, and death of Julius Caesar in a tottering republic. In his political speeches especially and in his correspondence we see the excitement, tension and intrigue of politics and the part he played in the turmoil of the time. Of about 106 Speeches, delivered before the Roman people or the Senate if they were political, before jurors if judicial, 58 survive (a few of them incompletely). In A.D. 1345 Petrarch discovered copies of a collection of more than 900 Letters of which more than 800 were written by Cicero and nearly 100 by others to him. These afford a revelation of the man and all the more striking because they were not written for publication. Six Rhetorical works survive and another in fragments. Philosophical works include seven extant major compositions and a number of others; and some lost. There is also poetry, some original, some as translations from the Greek

Rome, la dernière République recueil d'articles de by François Hinard( Book )

5 editions published between 2000 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 46 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this volume, Estell Bertrand brings together most of the articles that François Hinard, Professor of Roman history at the Sorbonne, had written at the time of his untimely death. They are dedicated to his major field of study--the history of the late period of the Roman Republic. The book is organized around four main themes reflecting Professor Hinard's global and interdisciplinary conception of research. Not only is the critical reconsideration of the Syllanian period at the core of the historian's investigation, but also the whole history of Rome through the troubled times of the last two centuries of the Republic. The evolution of government institutions in the transition from the Republic to the Principate, the political conflicts and their materialization within the territory of the Vrbs itself as well as their social and military aspects: those are the topics generating throughout the articles a consistent reflection to which we clearly owe the revised image we now have of the 'last Roman Republic'"--Page 4 of cover
