Father O'Malley is the new priest at the Church of St. Dominic in a working-class New York City neighborhood. He fails to make a good first impression with crusty old Father Fitzgibbon, who doesn't approve of O'Malley's golf playing, baseball game attending, or fishing. But O'Malley starts spiffing up the church and its neighborhood: dealing with the church mortgage, which is in arrears, and straightening out the street gangs by getting the boys to help him start a choir. Romantic matches are made; neighborhood busybodies are appeased. Many songs are joyfully sung, and O'Malley even arranges a big surprise for Fitzgibbon, who's homesick for Ireland

In 1866, Kansas, the American civil war has just finished and the armies disbanded. The building of the West begins, and in 1872, the new city of Dodge City is ruled by violence and shootings. The Fighting 69th" is a World War I regiment consisting mostly of New York-Irish soldiers. Jerry Plunkett is the cockiest member of a cocky crew. Jerry is a scrappy fellow who looks out only for himself. The officers and enlisted of the regiment do their best to instill discipline in Plunkett, and the chaplain, Father Duffy, tries to make Plunkett see the greater good. None of them seem to succeed. In the trenches, Plunkett acts selfishly and cowardly, eventually costing the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. A final act of cowardice leads to terrible consequences, but Plunkett sees in them a chance to redeem himself

As the wax figures melt amid the blaze, the two men begin to fight. The sculptor is knocked out and left to 'perish' amongst the flames. He resurfaces many years later for the launch of his own wax museum. However, the opening coincides with the sudden disappearance of some dead bodies from the city morgue.
